Hi I hope someone may be able to help, I have a 1975 RWD Toledo which blew its engine in 2017.
As I wished to keep the car on the road I ordered a short engine (SHORT ENGINE - 1300 LARGE CRANK OUTRIGHT) from Canleys this was ordered in the February and took until August to arrive.
In the mean time the head was sent to jonspeed for unleaded conversion. The engine was put together and ran ok for a year before the head gasket blew, investigation showed the block is recessed and requires a different gasket to the one used, but 2 1300 gaskets have been fitted 1 was from Canleys and when fitted the pistons are hitting the gasket.
There are no engine markings except half way down the block on the left are the following:

The receipt from Canleys say the engine number is
Order Date : 9 Feb 2017, 12:46:16
Order Reference : WEB33957

Car Model : Triumph Toledo 1300 RWD
Car Year : 1975

Engine Number : DH57688HE

any advise would be welcome

assuming they have supplied the correct block then you need the recessed head gasket. the recessed gasket apart from having the obvious raised bore rings also has an extra tab on the rearmost end which is also on the block.
Only use PAYEN gaskets.....

You can see the tab on the left side of that pic

Many thanks for this reply, my only question is will it fit this engine as I dont know its age. As I understand the gaskets are different in post 1972 engines.
Can its age be found from the supplied engine number DH57688HE

DH engine is dolomite 1300. So recessed gasket required.

Did you retorque the head after a few hundred miles? (I had an unfortunate experience with an engine I bought. I was told it was good, but not that it was actually completely rebuilt. So never run. 1000 miles on head gasket failed, as it hadn't been retorqued and the head nuts were not at all tight. Plus side a new gasket and it was still a great engine, since done 2xRBRR and everyday use in a friends car)
