Threaded plug in engine block

I'm stripping my block down for a thorough clean and repaint and have unearthed a threaded plug I've never seen before as it was covered in gunk.
Is this just simply threaded into the block or If I try to remove it am I going to open a can of worms? I had a major big end bearing failure so need to get at all the oil passageways to make sure all debris is gone.
Regards,
Mark

Suggest you leave it well alone as I believe this is the plugged hole for the oilway that is fed by the jackshaft and transfers oil to the head.

Yes you can unscrew these. Theres also one around the dizzy. When unscrewing these you can clean all oilway's in the engine and a lot of residu is alway's present in that particular bore. I use a hex plug to close these again.

thanks Gents.
I'll have to look more closely round the dizzy, I hadn't noticed that one.
Cheers

I've always left them alone.

I don't want to take any chances after finding a big end bearing looking like this.
