Carb float chamber location plug materials

#1 Post by GrahamFountain »

Does anyone know, of the sets of carbs fitted to the Sprint, which originally had the diecast metal inserts for locating the float chambers on the carb bodies and which would have had the rubbey ones as currently sold?

Also, are the rubbery ones really better?

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

The question is do the alloy inserts (pic attached) cause enough problems with transmitting vibration that their resistance, to presumably the fuel, isn't worth it? I know that the rubber ones someone had fitted to the (I think) Mk III Spitfire carbs on the Herald had badly perished and left the float chambers hanging down at an angle. When I replaced those, I could only find the rubber ones to buy, but I now have a spare set of metal ones from a pair of AUD 663 carbs.

So I'm wondering whether I should put rubber ones in the AUD 545s on the Sprint or put metal ones in the Herald's carbs?

I cannot believe the rubber ones would give much, if any, vibration protection so I would use the aluminium ones without any hesitation.

Rekon you're right. I'll just leave the metal ones in the Doly and the rubber ones in the Herald and see if the rubber ones melt again before the Heralds chassis.
