Ok so if I were to buy a Sprint that is currently painted in the dark brown would it be a sin to respray it in a more pleasing colour ?? Asking before I get banished forever

Couldn't agree more. But with the caveat that you should really paint the whole car, under the bonnet, inside the boot, etc. I don't like to see a car where only the outside has had a colour change. But that's just me and my opinion!

Or worse, I've seen cars where even the door apertures & frames are the old colour. i.e. resprayed with the doors shut. That surely is a sin.

It would be a sin in my book but only because I'm one of the few who actually quite likes Russet Brown. It's a colour that screams "1970s" at you.

My 1979 Russet Sprint is currently being refurbished in the capable hands of Carledo of this parish, including a partial respray. Wouldn't dream of changing the colour!

The only real downside is re-sale value Chris, if not done properly you would wipe a lot of value off??
But would the brown also wipe value off?? Like others have said it is your car

It's all personal taste, but as far as I'm concerned reducing the amount of 1970s brown in the world is virtually a public service!
I'd pick a colour that was actually a Triumph colour for Dolomites of the period though.

You can spray the car any colour you like but your plan doesn't make economic sense.

A full respray, to a decent standard is going to cost you thousands. It would make far more sense to use that money to buy a Sprint in good condition, with the colour you want. Unless you can get a lot off because the car is brown.

This one was (mostly) white originally. At 1978, it's too late, technically, to actually BE this colour.




But who cares? The owner likes it this way and the Magenta will probably have advanced it's value in some peoples eyes!

But please don't underestimate the amount of work involved in doing it properly, the car above was stripped to a bare shell to paint, no glass, wiring, pipework or interior fittings, the vinyl roof and headlining were all removed too. Even the back axle and front subframe were taken out and "slave" units installed to keep it mobile during the painting process. It saves money on masking tape true, but that's the ONLY cheap bit!

I do appreciate the quandary, i'm not a fan of Russet myself and my own car is on it's way from Russet to Vermillion for a variety of reasons. But like most things of this nature, there are a million reasons for buying a particular car, the supply of good ones is finite and the condition of the body and relative price are MUCH more important than what colour it is! Beggars can't be choosers or something like that.

Buy a brown car if it's the best one you can find, drive it around a bit and see if you can live with it (you can't see much brown from inside) If you can't, hopefully there will be enough contingency in your budget to paint it a colour you DO like. Budget includes TIME as well as money, a good job is not quick!

Of course, if you are starting with a restoration project, it's much easier to choose a different colour and make it practical to do it, as most of the stripping out will need to be done anyway!

Colour fashion comes and goes - look at all the grey cars, grey houses, grey double glazing, grey conservatories etc that are everywhere theses days. Had you gone into a car dealership 5 years ago and asked for a grey car you would have been laughed at. Now theyre everywhere. Well they are round these parts of the crazy south east, and London anyway.

My prediction is that brown will make a glorious comeback. Brown will be the new grey, you mark my words.

Seriously though.
Like the others have said- do a decent job of it by fully striping the car, and paint inside and out, in a period correct colour of your choice. It won’t be cheap though!

Plenty of brown modern cars about these last few years, everything from the likes Porches and Lexus to little Fiats that have reversed this insane dislike of brown some hold.

Years ago you couldn't give white car away, now look how many there are.

nothing wrong with brown!.but if was to re-spray my car it would have to be aquatic jade my old cortina colour,,,must dig out a picture of it
