A different MOT /tax question.

Hello All, I am happy to read that we have members on here with MOT Test expertise.

A friend is having to spend 8 weeks in the EU during which time the MOT / tax/ and insurance will all expire.
The trouble is she has received what I reckon is lots of bum advice on another non-motoring forum.
As I see it the car can be MOT'd at any time even though its not yet due ( like tomorrow before she moves ) and the pass MOT is valid for the following 12 months . Sorted.
I think the insurance can be renewed on-line at any time. Sorted ?
But can the tax be renewed on line if you are not in the U.K. ? I think the answer is a Yes, ... but I stand to be corrected.
TBH I think it would be easier to put the car into storage.

Thanks,
Tony.

If the car is not on a public road then do as Dave says and SORN it, but renew the insurance as usual. Then MoT and Tax when they return form the EU.

OR

Do as you say. MoT early (you will only get 12 months unless it is within a calendar month of expiry), and then renew tax online along with insurance.

Personally I would SORN it to save two months tax! but only if it can be kept off road. NOTE technically I think I would also inform the insurance company as I am not 100% certain they pay a claim if not taxed and MoT'd if they hadn't been informed.

With regard to taxing it online from the EU, this won't be a problem as long as the car is registered to a British address. I don't think DVLA has the resources to check the origin of an IP address!

But as everyone else has said, probably easier to SORN it and save the tax money!

wot he said above, I have taxed a car whist overseas as it expired whilst i was in Belguim. DVLA do not check or ask your location but they will need the tax reminder or V5 reference number, as there is no tx disc for the to send it will simply update the system to show tax is paid

Could the RFL not be done by direct debit? If not, just get a friend or family to do it.
