A round of applause required, please...

I took a 'phone call from Steve Wilkes this morning, he and his wife holidaying in Cornwall.

Unfortunately, 20 miles away from where they were staying, the oil cooler on his Sprint had sprung a leak; I'm just outside Looe he told me and had no roadside assistance or recovery and the oil had sprayed all over his brakes. He had some tools, and spare oil, but either needed a replacement cooler matrix or a replacement oil transfer housing so the cooler could be short circuited. I had both, and had thoughts of posting them down to him overnight, but that didn't get him out of the immediate predicament, and driving them down to him would have meant a 7 or 8 hour round trip.

Then I remembered Carl Shakespeare had moved to Cornwall. A quick call to Carl put them in touch with each other, and a couple of hours later, Steve rang to say that Carl had located them, helped him get the car running and cleaned the brakes and they were now back on the road and able to enjoy the rest of their holiday.

I'm often asked what are the benefits of Club membership; surely this is one of the important ones?

We have just come back from having a few days in Cornwall based near Padstow. We agreed with Steve it is obviously the place to go but we did not see any other dolomites on our travels. We visited Trerice @ National Trust house, The aircraft museum at Newquay and The lost gardens of Heligon. It was certainly good to get away.

It used to be a sheet of A4 paper that had contact details of folk willing to assist in situations just such as this, that could be kept in the glove box. Quite a lot of the folk on the original list have passed on or no longer have Dolomites.

It could now however be something in the Members' section on here, as many folk now have internet access on the move, perhaps supplemented by a paper copy for those who don't. A digital version would certainly be far simpler to manage and update.

All it needs is a willing volunteer to canvass for and receive interest, and to collate and manage the information...

Here's the current, albeit very old, list as a starting point;

Returned from Cornwall today under Dolly power thanks to Alun for putting me in touch with a truly top man by the name of Carl Shakespear. Thank you so much Carl for the transfer housing and cleaning the engine oil from the brakes. I will post the housing and your pressure switch back to you as soon as I can. I will not be putting the oil cooler back on as I had in a silly place any way over the exhaust manifold. I should have took some pictures of the engine oil on the outside of the nearside roadwheel, quite scary to be honest. Without your help Carl Ron would not be home under his own steam, once again thank you so much. :smooch:

You're welcome Steve, and it was good to see you both again after so long. Glad you managed to enjoy the rest of your holiday and get home safely.
