1500 Engine Removal

Hi All...

Is it easier to take the engine and gearbox out or just as easy to take just the engine out.

Previous removals I have done I took both out mainly as some work was needed on the gearbox too, in this case I only need to work on the engine.

Looking at the space available with the rad etc removed, looks as if there is enough space to move the engine far enough forward to disconnect from the input shaft on the gearbox.

On the 1500 its not too difficult to unbolt the gearbox but its a lot easier to pull out the engine and box in one go. removing the bonnet is a must but its a two man job if you like your paint.
When removing the engine with box intact I use a tilting lift to raise the back end off the ground which makes extraction very easy due to the angle

On 1500s, I usually remove the engine alone if I don't need to touch the gearbox. It's a lot less complicated on the angles,even with my sustantial engine crane and load leveller. Though being a grand master at clutch alignment helps when putting it back! The engine backplate's propensity to bend means you absolutely must NOT pull it in with the bolts!

Just about to take the engine out… do I need to Jack the gearbox up so the sump doesn’t hit the subframe or is there enough room without…

A bit late, but.... You don't really NEED to support the bellhousing whilst pulling the motor out, on the 1500, the subframe will stop it dropping too far and breaking something. having said that, it does make the whole process a bit less dramatic. But it's a must when putting it back!

I did in the end put some support under it, but as you say it came out fairly easily.

I will for remitment Jack the gearbox up to get the best angle…
