Could someone be kind enough to point me in the direction of a good but cheap(ish) internal ignition kit for the 1850.

I've now fitted 3 or 4 of Simon BBC's Accuspark kits to TR7 and 1850 (and one to a Vauxhall Victor FD that uses the same dizzy) Had no problems so far, the oldest one must have been in 5 or 6 years now.

Yes it's a pain to fit, having to dismantle the dizzy. But worth it just to never have to mess with points in it again!

SimonBBC is Powerspark, not Accuspark. I fitted their K25 kit for Delco 300 distributor to my 1850HL back in March and so far it has been excellent. The car starts almost without turning the key and is far smoother when running. I also fitted one of their coils, the black 3 ohm model and did away with the ballasted ignition system.

As Steve says the Delco dissy is a pain in the trousers and so a fit and forget module is a great idea - providing it keeps working. After all they must be Chinese components at that price....

The price of the SimonBBC offering is such that you can afford to keep a spare set in the glovebox. The only part that requires the dizzy to be dismantled is the magnet ring and since this is a no contact part with nothing to go wrong with it, it's unlikely to fail. The pickup and triggering unit can be changed at the roadside in minutes. So even in case of failure, it's not going to strand you or need recovery if you have a spare.

They are the same as the britpart ones and it doesn't surprise me that they are all generic Chinese stuff.

The Sparkrite SX6000 Simonbbc sells don't seem to be one of the generic Chinese ones. It also, unusually, is reckoned to work with both 6v and 12v coils - there's some question if the Chinese generics do, and I've ordered one that may fit the Sprint and should fit the Herald to see.

Whether this SX6000 one fits under the 44D rotor arm and guard would be interesting to know.

They look different to me and the Sparkrite one explicitly supports 6v ballasted coils and coils down to 1.5 Ohms, where Jeroen suggests 3 Ohms is "the conventional value of a ballasted coil and resistor or a non ballasted coil" and "2,5 Ohm or less will damage the [Lumination] module within 10 minutes." While there are others that sell the Sparkrite ones, I haven't seen ones like them direct from China.

I had the sparkrite fitted to my dolly 1300 but couldn't get the timing right so changed back to points.

I've been thinking of getting one of the SX6000's for the Sprint and have established with SimonBBC that it should physically fit in the 44D4 under the standard rotor arm and flashguard, unlike the generic 45D ones from China and such. Also, there should be no issue in it driving the 6v ballasted coil, again unlike the generic ones.

I've also got one of the lower profile 25D units on order from China to see if it will fit and drive the 6v coil - I can use it in the 25D on the Herald if not.

So, what was the problem setting the timing with the Sparkrite on your 1300 Doly? I assume that's in a 45D.
