Auto box fluid query

Hi all you knowledgable people , I have a 1850 auto and reading the Haynes manual for instructions to check the transmission oil level it says go for a run and return home and leave the engine running while in park for a couple of minutes and then check the levels. I have done all that and the level is very low. My question is where do I fill it up? -- Through the dipstick or under the car through the gearbox filler?.
The other question is what is the difference between power steering fluid and auto box fluid. Am I right in thinking they are same?

The autobox fills through the dipstick tube. The fluid is basic ATF, not Dexron or any of those other fancy fluids, sometimes sold as PAS fluid too but check. There are some fancy PAS fluids available too these days, some are more like LHM than oil! (Vauxhall electric over fluid, to name but one) The correct stuff is a deep, rich red colour, not conclusive, but a good first check.

The technique i've always used since my apprentice days, is to warm it up, then with the vehicle running and stationary, run through the selections starting with 1 and moving back to P, 1 step at a time and pausing 20-30 secs at each point. then dip immediately once back in P.

HTH, Steve

As long as it is type f or type g atf. Not the Dexron 1, 2, 3 etc. or sometimes called just atf 2 etc..

This is the correct stuff :D It's what Borg Warner use, and i use it in my three Triumph automatics.

This is also recommended by the Rover P6 boys, this is the same ATF I use in my auto 1850 and auto sprint.

Comma AQF is one particular ATF that can be used as recommended by Steve W.

Malcolm, you're right. The P6 uses the Borg Warner transmissions as well as the Dolomite. Fords of the same era also used Borg Warners. Dexron is a very big no-no.
