Hello
I know on here somewhere is a wealth of information on how to drop a Tr7/1850 engine into a Toledo. I might be considering doing the same thing and would be keen to understand what is involved. I know this topic has been covered on here somewhere but I cant seem to find it.
Could someone please point me in the right direction?
many thanks

Re: Dropping a TR7/1850 into a Toledo
Before doing this, the first thing I would consider is your gearbox and diff. I think your setup could handle the power from an 1850, though don't quote me on that. The extra power from a TR7 could well lunch your 1300 diff or gearbox.
The subframes are different, so you will need to modify your existing frame or source an 1850/sprint one. You will need new radiator, oil hoses and a new loom or modify your own. The electrics are on the opposite side for a lot of items on the slant engines. Oh and you will need a new exhaust and reroute some of the fuel lines.
I have put a Sprint into a 1500 and to be honest it is a lot of work. It probably be more cost effective to sell the Toledo and buy an 1850.

What about brakes do they need doing as well

Rather ridiculously the Toledo/Dolomites pretty much all have the same brake setup, so it would only be an issue if the car was an early one with front drums.new to this wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:50 pmMattcleverusername wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:08 pm Before doing this, the first thing I would consider is your gearbox and diff. Re: Dropping a TR7/1850 into a Toledo
If you've got the TR7 block, you want the TR7 dipstick and somewhere to clamp the top of it to (BL used the front of the airbox), as it's about 2 ft 6 long. Don't know the 1850, but if it's like the Sprint, they aren't really interchangeable, cos the tube in the block is different.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.
Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

Re: Dropping a TR7/1850 into a Toledo
Hi just playing around with the idea at this stage - you could spend endless amounts of money and time interchanging these things around.
Points to note
I'm in NZ and Toledos and dolomites are very thin on the ground out here so just getting a dolomite isn't really an option especially as I have had the toledo painted. truth be known I should have got a Dolomite rather than a toledo from the start but the wisdom of hindsight and all that
I can get access to a dolomite engine gearbox and subframe quite easily which makes this an even more tempting idea! I have taken the subframe out of the toledo everything else out - suspension, engine etc and put it all back in again - a lot of work but not difficult or complicated.
Whether or not I go down the 1850 path I'm going to upgrade the front brakes anyway (tracker jack)
I really bought this car to fiddle with and develop so taking it to bits and putting it all back together again is all part of the fun!
This car was originally a 1300 but I have put a 1500 in it - as far as the diff is concerned I think they share the same diff? The car that is donateing it engine and gearbox may also be the source of a dolomite diff. (two cars made into one - a good shell from one and the running gear from another)
As y'all know it pays to grab they bits when they come available as they are getting rarer and rare these days.
And I have just bought some Alfa 156 leather seats too! And I need to put in the coilover suspension as well!
cheers
Alastair
