Does anyone have contact with a friendly metal spinner?

I’m wondering if we can get the spare wheel well of the boot floor replicated as a repair section rather than going the unviable pressing route...

There are two local to me. One is literally 2 miles up the road and years ago I did get a batch of headlamp rims made there for another car. Not sure they can do something as big as the wheel well. When we are allowed out again I can drive over to them both in the Dolomite and see if they are interested.

Any idea on rough quantities and acceptable cost? - just so I have something to go on.


Dave (newto this) - metal spinning is not machining on a lathe or a mill. It is a technique for forming circular sheet metal shapes. Think hubcaps, and woks for cooking! Have a quick "google" and all will be revealed.

how about making it in two peaces the out side rim and the centre middle part then they could be welded together

Is the rim of the boot well curved inwards ?

When you say a metal spinner do you mean Lathe / Mill ?

My plan is to make it in four pieces; we already have the two ends available as I managed to get a press tool made reasonably for those as the depressions are shallow, the wheel well should be an easy task for a metal spinner...which just leaves the tank well to resolve

I've found a couple local to me too, but neither have websites (a good sign of traditional engineering companies...either that or they've gone bust!).

Cost will be dictated by the process, so several quotes would be ideal. Quantity? probably a dozen or so to start with, it seems to be the tank well which suffers worst...

The "best" small firms that do the sort of things we as a small car club want rarely do have websites - in fact if they do have a "glossy" website they often have prices to match !!

I will see what the really local one can do - will call them on Monday - I suspect that size may be an issue with them, but it will be easy to pop in and see them whilst out getting an MoT!

Quick question how big a section was you thinking of getting from the metal spinners?



Are you thinking as big a diameter as possible (A) and see if the two reinforcing bits (1,2) can be pressed in, or are you talking about the smaller "inner" circle (B) ?

'B' is where the rot generally occurs and the indent at '2' is already part of the side repair. I'll check on my NOS panel to see if the indent at 1 is the same as any of the lateral indents as if so a repair for that area in isolation could be easily fabricated.

Can you make me a floor which is a couple of inches deeper please? So I can lower the Sprint sized spare.

You only need 5/8" for the floor board to fit flat!

They are tapered and i did recently look at making one as well as tapering you need to put the beading in for strength which doing by hand is very time consuming which in turn will make them very expensive.

Have you considered Hydroforming as a possible alternative? No personal expertise in the area but it may be a solution for the bowl under the fuel tank and this area.

I don't know that much about the process, but will look into it...I think it still requires a die, but if it only involves half of a press tool, it should be half the cost...but then maybe I'm an optimist...
