Good morning a quick question : Is it possible to remove the oil sump completely whilst the engine is in the car.
I have a vague recollection it will only drop so far and as I wish to fit a new gasket (a silicon one) total removal would be good.
I have a feeling the oil pick up stops it being able to slide forward to clear the sub frame.

You may have to loosen the engine mounts and jack it up but not possible otherwise.

You can do it by dropping the pan and then removing the oil pick-up. Then rotate the pan to remove it, afair.

Indeed, but the issue being replacement of the oil pick up!

Yep, but I'm pretty sure I've done it before.

It looks like I`m in for an interesting time - like everything else on a sprint!

Very simple. No need the jack engine up or touch the mounts.
Drain oil. Remove sump bolts and allow sump to drop an inch onto the rack. Push sump across to passenger side an inch. This will expose the pickup tube bolts. Undo those and drop the pickup into the sump. Twist the sump 90 degrees and drop it out.
To reassemble, get the sump into position and fiddle the oil pickup back up then get the bolts started. Grease on the gasket helps a lot. Slightly awkward but not hard.

Did you try removing and replacing the sump. Mine is completely free of paint. I plan to remove it to give it a refurb. Would be very interested in how you got on.

As Matt and Mart have said above it’s a simple enough job. I’ve changed the sump gasket on my car just last week. The last page on my resto thread has a little description.

Trouble is for me, every time I fix an oil leak another one starts elsewhere! I think I need to look at the cam cover breather to check there is adequate ventilation.

Definitely worth checking the gauze in the cam cover. I recently bought another cover to "do up" as the one on my car is showing its age. When I removed the wire gauze it was choked with thick black greasy "gunk". Not convinced that just rinsing it through with petrol without removing it would have cleaned it all out.

I am quite impressed at how "dry" and "oil free" my Sprint engine is. I have never run a classic car that doesn't mark it's territory in someway - my Land Rover being the worst by a country mile
