Dolomite Sprint engine rebuild

Hy,
I am Nico from Luxembourg ,we are running a Dolomite Sprint from 1977, at some local events for classic cars. However we have been facing some issues with engine overheating, which we got under control with a supplementary electrical water pump and an electrical fan. However we feel that the engine is not functioning at it’s optimal power. So we decided to rework the engine. I am looking for advices and experiences in our dolomite club.
We are searching for shops offering the various services on all engine components, would it be rework or replacements, we have not yet made up our mind on rebuilding the engine ourselves, hence having the rework of engine components done by specialists or subcontracting the whole engine rework. We are not looking for a super tuned engine for racing but an engine with decent reliable performance. I am thankful for any recommendation, experience and address

Well the obvious question is whether you have run a compression test to check for wear? If so, what figures did you get?

Mad Mart for a standard Rebuild.

Ken Clarke for a more spirited Rebuild.

Sure there’s others.

Jon Jackson is probably the nearest to south coast ports/Luxembourg...

No we have not checked compression, as it is obvious that the engine is not running at its optimum,
is burning oil ( nice blue smoke coming out of the exheaust) and we made the decision to rework the engine.
That's why I try to collect advices and experiences

That's not under control..

I can advise your local machine shop. There's a list of modifications you can do to have a healthy engine without the need of extra parts and pumps etc. or solve overheating issues by a 100x100cm radiator. Important is to use the correct parts and not just order bearings, chains and tensioners what is available around the corner. Some parts have to be from a specific brand to have a lasting engine.

It's not that difficult but there are some things to know what makes (engine) life easier.

Jeroen

To be fair you didn't make that clear in your original post, you said that you felt you engine was not running at optimal power, without mentioning it was burning oil.

All I was doing was making sure you had eliminated other culprits before starting an expensive engine rebuild.

@ soe8m
Would you have a list of those parts with the correct source and would you share these infos with me
Thanks
Nico

Hello Nico and welcome to this forum!

A few years ago, Hans at BCCP.nl in the Netherlands put together my standard Sprint engine. With the correct parts and some minor modifications to improve reliability as Jeroen stated above, my engine made 132 bhp at the wheels on the dyno test rig. That is with standard cam and SU HS6’s.

See this post: forum.triumphdolomite.co.uk/viewtopic.18168
and this video: sprint.smugmug.com/Cars/Standard Sprint

If you’re interested, Hans can be contacted on here (forum name Hans ten Broeke) or drop me a PM for his email and tel.nr.

Hope this helps!
