Sprint ignition timing

HI All.
What timing figure at what engine speed do you use when setting timing using Strobe ? Standard sprint (except for enlarged down pipe and sports Exhaust)?
I am using Esso 99 RON (no Ethanol).
Just want to minimise the trial and error activity a bit.

32 degrees max. All above can have it pinking. What it does have at idle it is what it is then. Some concentrate on setting the timing exactly at idle but forget that when the engine has 250 revs above idle all is way off factory settings again. Lucas dizzies arent accurate when new and after 20.000 miles the curve becomes fantasy comparing to the figures in the book. This is the reason that point replacements like lumenition or accuspark don't have much use. The timing doesn't change...

When setting at 32 max and at idle it's nowhere it's time to find another distributor what's a bit near factory.

Hi Jeroen, Thanks for your notes on this.
One question, how do you measure the 32 degrees on the crankshaft when my grating only goes up to 24 degrees ?
For my road going Sprint at 10 degrees at 850 rpm and the 24 degrees at 2000 rpm with the vac; pod disconnected isn't that a good indication that everything is O.K ?

With an adjustable stroboscope or make your own 32 mark. Max advance will be somewhere inbetween 3000 3500 revs. You can't tell for sure if 24 at 2000 has 32 at max.

With a fixed stroboscope, you can try this:

Assuming you have already highlighted the TDC mark on your crank pulley with white paint, you can now rotate the crankshaft a further 20 degrees after TDC and make a new paint mark on the pulley at the zero grating on the marker. You now have two paint markings on the pulley, one at TDC and one at 20 degrees ATDC.

To check the advance at higher rpm with the fixed stroboscope, you can focus on the 20 degrees ATDC marking and at 12 degrees you will now find the 32 degrees max advance you’re looking for (20 + 12 = 32 degrees).
