The Digital Dolomite

Hi All

Something I thought might be a nice idea to start but it might already either been done or in the works is to maybe create a kind of digital Dolomite. basically making some bits and pieces virtually that any forum member could access and a reasonably competent person could manufacture them either from original style materials or from modern style materials. If other people want to contribute sketches, drawings, or files, they can be added as well.

It’s just something that I’d be working on in my spare time. I’ve already done a handful of components that are 95% the way there (just due to manufacturing tolerances of BL make the last 5% hard), but accurate enough that someone could make it. Could either be used to help someone repair their components or build something from scratch that isn’t easily available.

The main items I’m thinking of are like; carpets, door cards, boot trim, dashboard wood panels, door trim, etc. Things that can be made without the use of a several-tonne press or complex machines.

I can start, I just spent a good few hours modelling up the under-dash parcel shelf, just as it was in the garage, and the front uprights. The uprights aren’t something someone could make but its to help me work on something else more interesting 😏

Edit: added sketch of the parcel shelf

Another obsolete part modelled!

This time it’s the Sprint Grill. Took a good while to sort this one out but now you can take it and have a pair 3D Printed! Or if you want to make your own custom grill, just hollow it out.

You could also take sections of this and make it out of a flat sheet of plastic like a wooden model if your brave enough

The STL files are attached so they can be imported into whatever software. Maybe the Club could get someone to make a batch

Excellent work. Unfortunately my printer isn't big enough. Have you included the holes for the fixings?

Yes! I have. It’s not 100% accurate to a stock grill as the originals have a very slight taper to all the vertical surfaces for help getting it out of the moulds. I haven’t recreated this as if printed it doesn’t need it and it’s added complication for no real benefit.

In theory, you can split the grill in half and print it out in two parts and glue/melt them together.

What printer do you have? I’ll have a go tomorrow breaking it up into suitable chunks for you. I’m hopefully going to get a resin printer in the next few months which should give a smooth, stock like surface finish.

an update just for you, Mart.

Finally got some free time this week and sorted it all out. I’ve split each grill into two separate parts, both within the bounds of a Creality Ender 3 (I’ve assumed that this is what you’ve got, it’s a pretty popular model)

I’ve also gotten the Early 1300/1500 grill done! They’ve also been split into two parts for printing.

Thank you.

Yes I have an Ender 3v2. I sliced one section in Cura and it will take 1 Day 16 Hours to print. So I think I'll give that a miss, unless someone pays me lots of money to print a set!

But a great effort from you.

Yeah, I’m just trying to make sure that some of the less commercially viable parts are still available to the people who enjoy Dolomites.

Im trying to stick to the plastics and wooden parts for now so that they can be either 3D printed or easily made in single batches. If anyone else wants to join in it would be appreciated, even if you just make a quick sketch, I can try and make files and parts in my spare time.

Something not existing but thought it might be useful

Low profile bell-mouths for the different size SU carbs. Only 10mm tall so might not have a massive increase but will help with airflow slightly.

There’s nothing stopping you from making them longer if you wanted to.

You could try the plastic clip/bush which is the lower pivot for the front quarter window. These are nearly always cracked or broken and are NLA.

I’ll have a look, I’m mainly focusing on parts I’m taking off my car to work on it, but I’ll try and get it out next time I’m working.

But yes! This is what I mean, if there’s any parts that just aren’t available, I’ll try and get one so the community can create them
