I spent some time today stripping chassis no 579 down some more, and crawling underneath for the first time I found what was left of the exhaust. Tail pipes were standard Sprint flavour, but I’ve not seen silencers like these before:

My over-riding question is WHY????

I can see subbing 2 small straight through boxes for the stock big ones, but why on earth would anyone prepared to go that far want to retain the hopeless and convoluted gasflow of the original when a straighter path is available, preferable and almost certainly a lot cheaper?

Unless it's something to do with compo homologation, I can't explain it!

Is it Stainless? My 1850 had exactly that arrangement when I got it. The original single in/out on the same end big can was replaced by two smaller silencers connected just like that. It had a SS system fitted.

No, it's a long way from being stainless!

I'm guessing an aftermarket replica fabricated with stock components, the original box not being a stock component of that particular manufacturer.

The car had been retro fitted with an 1850 engine, so I suppose it received the 1850 exhaust at the same time...

I suspect what has happened, is the original silencers were rotten and someone has bought a couple of generic silencers to replace them.

I did something similar when I first got the 1500, the rear silencer was rotten and I couldn't afford to replace it at the time. So £20 universal silencer off ebay and a bit welding got it through the MOT.
