Compared to prices & wages in the early-1980s, petrol is probably much cheaper these days in relative terms than it was then! Back in the early-1980s, I payed just under £1.80 per Imperial gallon for the Toledo's 4* petrol, when a university graduate in physics, might reasonably expect a starting salary of £3,000 ~ £3,500 per annum.
