Hello, Its my first post in here, and I must say the site seems a million miles better than others I frequent......

So, here we go, I dare say there will be a myriad of questions, probably mostly stupid........

I recently purchased a modified Toledo, its the first pre modified car I have ever bought, I normally build my own, The back axle is from a Sprint, but it leaks more oil than the Tory Canyon, (showing my age here), what is the axle based on?, it looks like a 4HA, or a Dana33, but look again and MGB springs to mind? or even the good OLD hot rodders favourite Westminster/Sherpa, please can somebody put me out of my quandary?
Once I have all the paperwork in hand I will post up details of the car, I LOVE it, most fun I have had in ages

Welcome! Can't help on the axle question, but more knowledgeable people will no doubt be along shortly. (Although the look of the Sprint rear axle reminds me a bit of the Land Rover Salisbury, which is dana60 based IIRC?)

Is it leaking into the drums? It’s common on modified cars that are driven in a more spirited fashion and more so on the nearside on track frequented cars.

A common upgrade is to use the more robust gearbox oil seal instead of the standard…I’ll try to find the part numbers when I get out of bed…

No, its the diff cover I think, or even the pinion seal, when I get my garage a bit more empty I will get the car up in the air for a good nosy around, I think theres a sump gasket leak too, lots of little jobs to make a good car even better.

Such oil leaks are not uncommon, probably just worn seals and gaskets.

The Sprint axle is derived from the one used in the Triumph TR4 (not 4A, which had IRS as did all subsequent TR chassied models) The case is slightly different to accomodate the different suspension setup but the internals and 1/2 shafts bearings, hubs and (crucially) brakes are the same as the TR4.

Backplate gasket is a doddle, hub seals are easy enough (but use the Sprint gearbox input shaft seal 141756 as Alun recommended)

The pinion seal is another kettle of fish altogether as the pinion is tensioned by a collapsible spacer twixt the pinion bearings which is single use only (at least in theory) and new ones are made of unobtanium. There is a half assed way round it that DOES mostly work, this involves marking the nut and flange, carefully removing the nut whilst counting the turns, then removing the nut and flange, changing the seal and restoring the nut to EXACTLY the same position it came off from. This hopefully maintains the original preload on the pinion bearings.

BTW, what engine is this beast running?
