Engine adapter Plate

This may sound odd but I've forgotten how to fit the engine adapter plate, can i fit it to the gearbox first and then to the engine or is it the other way round

Yes, bolt to the engine first otherwise it would make it tricky or maybe impossible to get at the plate to engine bolts.

Thanks for the replies, ive noticed some of the bolt holes in the gear box bell housing don't line up
