Had a truck (lorry) throw a rock at me and now have a shattered windscreen. I have glass cover on my insurance, however repairer says insurance will only cover installation of a laminated screen rather than original spare (which I have on hand).

I see Rimmers have laminated screens listed but it says 4-6 weeks ex their supplier, and I'm in nz so add another 4-6.

Are there other sources of laminated screens?

I did have a new laminated screen fitted in Auckland but that was over a decade ago. At the time I was told that was the last in stock in NZ. I'm not aware of any now, but haven't looked as haven't needed one.

Assume you tried all the major suppliers / installers direct? Could they get one, perhaps from Aussie? Best to leave sourcing a laminated one from overseas to your repairer as the packaging and freight cost of bringing a single screen in from the UK will be eye watering.

I've got a few old toughened screens in the barn, but I would try long and hard to find a laminated one before fitting a secondhand toughened screen.

Would the repairer do you a special deal to install your spare toughened one while they source a laminated one which insurer should pay all the costs for? Maybe worth asking?

There are no laminated (or toughened) new screens available off the shelf in Australia.

An acquaintance recently had one custom made at a cost of A$1200 plus GST.

If you want to go this route send me a PM and i will get the details of the supplier for you.

You probably wouldn’t need a heated front screen but may be a option.

Carriage is likely to be your biggest problem.

Here in UK Kevin Robinson commissioned some copy windscreens and I can put you in touch with him, but glass per se is a prohibited material for all couriers I’ve used

Let your insurance co sort a replacement laminated one per their rules. In the meantime, take a pic (if you haven't already) and fit your spare one yourself it's not difficult, you are most unlikely to damage a toughened one fitting it and that'll keep you going till a spandy new laminated one arrives!

A couple of months I used Caledonian Logistics to deliver 1000kg of glass from Glasgow.
Cost was £56+VAT.

Is there any reason why you cannot fit your own spare zone-toughened windscreen yourself, which will only require the assistance of one or two helpers, with protective gloves and a length of strong cord!?! Had your “original” zone-toughened windscreen not been shattered, it would potentially have remained perpetually in service.

Given that you had a zone-toughened windscreen rather than a laminated windscreen, were you carrying a universal emergency, roll-up plastic windscreen with reinforcement bars in your on-board emergency touring spares cache. I still have the one from the AA that we bought in 1975 for use with our 1973 VW 1600 Type 2 Westfalia Continental motor-caravan (still has the original factory-fitted zone-toughened front windscreen); especially when touring mainland Europe. A few months ago, I found that something similar is or at least was still available from Wootons Auto Accessories, in New Lynn, Aukland, New Zealand. A similar product is available from G & R Wills Wholesalers in Australia.

Watching one of those car shows might of been wheels dealers.
They couldn’t find a windscreen for a car.

They eventually got a car glass supplier to find a screen of the same curvature and managed to cut a screen out of this,

Maybe a option.

I saw that one! They cut a screen for a Saab 96 from one meant for some sort of Chevrolet! High art indeed!

Also the Dolomite has much more steeply curved ends where the Saab screen is relatively flat, it will be a lot harder to find a suitable donor as width is critical to the Toledo screen and modern cars are much wider.

Are you seriously trying to suggest that New Zealanders are less or even non skilled?

It is a fact that people in remote locations are adept at finding solutions, they don’t have the luxury
of having everything at their fingertips
not that New Zealand is in any way remote.

That's not even remotely what he's suggesting, no.
The "windscreen guru" was in the USA. Is there someone of similar skill here in the UK? Who knows. Its not any kind of slight on NZ.

Thanks all for your comments. I've tried a couple of specialist windscreen places here in NZ regarding getting a screen made, but they both suggested bringing in from the UK. Just waiting on insurance approval to get the order underway.
