Normally a fibre washer if there's one at all. Just last week fitted a Smiths dual oil pressure/water temp guage (bought from Manners as for Spridget) which had a brass cone and socket and no seal evident. It don't leak!

On these Steve, is the coolant temperature measured mechanically or electrically?

Is it a copper pipe that is used for the oil?

I looked at one of they dual gauges on an MGB many years ago, I seem to mind
that the feed pipe had a spiral appearance rather than plain copper?

Thanks

Ian, the water temp is sensed mechanically by capillary, it is this lead (which is integral with guage and sensing bulb) which is spiral bound with steel wire.

I've seen copper oil pipes, but this particular one, (not supplied with the guage) was a plastic pipe with brass barbettes fused into the ends.

If you choose to buy one like this, you need to be aware that a brass adaptor is needed to make the MG temp bulb fitting match the Sprint manifold hole, not exactly easy to find, but proprietary ones ARE available, I just can't quite remember where the last one I bought came from, may have been Car Builder Solutions. You also need to buy an oil pipe and tee piece to fit the oil pressure guage.

The particular one I fitted, with temperature calibrated in degrees Centigrade, replaced a previous similar unit calibrated C-N-H, (degrees Fahreheit is also available) but the temperature part had ceased to work (first time for everything, never known one fail before) so all the donkey work had been done and I was able to swap it out in a couple of hours. Manners provided the best price (new) on ebay, £123 including VAT and carriage.

Using the trade account I can get the price of each of the 3 types Steve mentions reduced to about £110 inc VAT though carriage from me to you would add £3.50

Thanks Steve, that’s food for thought.

I am actually thinking of fitting a higher rated (20psi) sender
but a dual gauge appeals.

Incidentally Chris Witor sells the oil feed pipes, he has an Aeroquip version
which I suspect is the best solution? Albeit £40 no less

The Spiral pipe is filled with a gas/fluid so you have to be careful not to bend /brake the pipe when fitting
the oil pipe im using on mine is a stainless aeroquip

Hi Dave, Sorry I'm late on this one. If it's the MGB gauge there is a small leather washer (!) at the top end of the pipe where it joins the gauge: Part number 2K4936 item 44 on the web-site.
HTH,
Tony.
