Sounds like your ignition switch has failed. The switch is a completely separate component, with it's own harness, screwed into the back of the steering lock. If you take off the column shrouds you will see it. Should be a fairly easy replacement.

Sounds like an internal disintegration of the electrical switch part of the ignition barrel.
Take the column cowl off (3 screws) and there are 2 tiny screws holding the switch assembly into the barrel.
Undo the screws and pull the switch out. This can now be tested with a small screwdriver substituting for the key.
If it works, all well and good and the fault is the blade on the back of the barrel not engaging the switch properly. Sometimes the little screws securing the switch can come loose/fall out and this is the whole fault!
If it works erratically or not at all in screwdriver mode, the switch is duff. While i've seen people dismantle and rebuild these switches, they aren't meant to be repairable and the repairs don't work or don't last. I just change out the switch whilst, at the same time, installing a start relay to take some of the heavy electrical load off it!
Hope this helps, Steve
