Sprint tail shaft

My Dolomite Sprint has a one piece tail shaft is this correct, or has it been changed in a previous life possibly, is it ok to keep using the one piece tail shaft or should by changed to a two piece tail shaft. If I am unable to locate an original two piece shaft, can one from a different Truimph be modified if required and used

Hi Geoff, If you mean the propshaft, this should be a 2-piece split prop; originally. RKC 1840 for the manual car and RKC 1841 for the automatic.
There should be a centre rubber-supprt bearing and the centre element should be a C.V. joint not a Hooke joint.

The first question is ... what else has been changed ? For instance it may have been a 1500 in the dim distant past and may have the Sprint engine fabricated on a 1500 sub-frame.

If it is indeed the propshaft you are after, an ad in the wanted section of this forum should bring you a result in fairly short order, Sprint propshafts aren't that hard to come by, though you may have to get a centre bearing fitted! All Sprint props from factory were 2 piece split props.

My tame propshaft specialist builder who makes all the bespoke props for my modified Dolomites has warned me against using a one piece prop, it's a catch 22 situation, use a 2 piece and its complex, use a one piece and it needs to be so beefy that any advantage is lost.

I am located in Canberra ACT Australia, sorry for calling it a tailshaft should have said prop shaft I guess different places different names, anyway I have carried out some research on the Sprint I have and found out the following it is VA15334 on compliance plate and engine the differential is stamped VA15434 but the tailshaft sorry prop shaft looks like it is a 75mm diameter tube with one end having a sliding spline, there is small metal plate attached to the shaft which appear to indicate that it has been balanced when made. The body is fitted with a support flat bar bracket near the front of the Shaft that would appear to prevent the prop shaft from coming into contact with the ground if it should disengage from the OD gearbox. After talking to the local Diff doctor he commented that it was not uncommon to replace 2 piece shafts with remade 1 piece shafts because of the cost involved in rebuilding 2 piece shafts and when balanced properly there was no issues

Hi Geoff From Perth here and very common for sprints to run with a tail shaft from a triumph 2500. Mine was the same until I swapped back to correct 2 pieces prop shaft and took advantage of one being shipped out by Alun. My single piece went through UJ’s quite quickly and this got me thinking mod was more bodge than a decent solution. Post costs can be spicy be spicy!
