Door outer weather strips.

#1 Post by B8WLY »

Dear All.

In the process of changing the door outer weather strips.

Door cards off. Old weather strips removed.

So far no problems. On the fronts there were three old style retaining clips and on the back only two so the old weather strips were not as securely fixed as I wanted.

Got 4 meters of weather strip from COH Bain. £16 and great quality. A fraction of the price of Rimmers and others,

Now the problem. I got some new fixings from ANG Classics, and they are near on impossible to get back on. The older clips that were on the car went back on no problems and hold the new weather strips perfectly.

Picture attached. My question is are these the right ones. The website said they fitted a Dolomite,

I have found some more I will order tomorrow. Picture again attached.

If anyone knows of fixings they have used you can actually get back on without busting your fingers please free feel to share a link.

It’s not a difficult job but I am sure the so called Dolomite fixings I ordered, just are not right.

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

Richard.

This old chestnut!

Original weatherstrips had a recessed back in 5 spots along the length of the strip. The modern stuff you buy doesn't, so the clips are impossible.

I buy 4 weatherstrips sold by Fitchetts for Spitfire, they are too long but easily cut to size with a decent sidecutter and you can cut a bit off each end and get a clip recess at each end of the new length and 3 more in the middle, which is perfect. I also buy my clips from Fitchetts, theirs are painted rather than bare metal so rust slower.

You can also get a tool that helps with fitting the clips, but I use a Spitfire front lower wishbone shim and a molegrip, works for me!

PS the clip in the lower pic is for the inner weatherstrip.

Cheers Steve.

I will order some more clips from Fitchets today,

With the door cards off trying to push the clips up to catch the door and the rubber proved near on impossible. Is this down to firstly the clips not being the same as the OEM originals ??

The original clips on the car which I saved pushed on relatively easy. This tells me the new clips I purchased are not right.

Will try again with some new clips and let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Richard.

I put the clips on the door from outside, window down and pull the clip up onto the doorskin with a flat, thin nosed pair of pliers. New clips will just about hold to the door without the rubber there. Then I hold each clip up in turn with my home made tool and start the rubber into one end clip working my way towards the other end, moving the tool as I do so, so the tool is always holding up the clip i'm working on. I don't try and get the clip fully seated first time, but usually make 2 passes. With the correct strips having the recesses for the clips, thumb pressure on the strip against the tool/clip is sufficient to fit them.

I'll sort the tools out and take some pics. I may even have a spare strip I can photograph, I fit quite a few! Maybe even put a "how to" video up (once it stops raining!) This question comes up at least once a year!

I got my weather strips and clips from Chris Witor, they worked fine together, and Chris has a reputation for selling parts that actually fit.

Makes perfect sense. Seeing a video however on how you do it would be really helpful.

Thanks once more.
