The dwell angle is the time the points stay closed, which is the amount of time the coil has to re-energize between ignition firings. Too shorter dwell time (angle) and the coil may not re energise sufficiently.

Engine mods
Fit new performance single valve springs, clean the ports up, dont open them up, just clean up any rough casting marks, and align the ports and manifold. I have never had any problems with rockers cracking or breaking up to 8000 rpm.If marked thay can be refaced. Providing the engine has had a good ...

I spoke to Brett Riley once (Mansells F3 partner) and he said the engines they used were built by Swindon.

I have never heard of a thickwall block as bore wear or weakness etc does not seem to be a problem. What they did make was a chromium iron block which was much stronger, and helped prevent cracks around the main bearing webs. Scott what did they find with your engine re the bearings?<br>

Race Costs
I would concur with Geoff. As a memeber I can hire Teretonga Race circuit for $40.00 per half day and that could be with just myself out there. Race entries for a 2 day classic meeting are $200 -210 and for a hill climb (3 runs sealed road) $60.00. Race Entry for the Dunedin Road Race was $200 which ...

Spark Plugs
I have used Champion S52R retracted earth plugs for a number of years which are a very cold plug. I had no problems starting or running with these. However Champion recommend a retracted earth plug as a last resort(only when you are limited by piston clearance) I have now gone to Champion S57 and ...

Trophee de LAvenir Cars
Does anyone have any information on the Dolomite Sprints that competed in the above series in the 1975 TT Tourist Trophy Race, particularly the car Andy Rouse drove. I have seen a picture some years back in the Dolomite Magazine but there was no information with it. I presume the car is still ...

Baffles
This is very similar to the sump that I used. There are swing gates in the sump extensions, and instead of an open hole for the pickup, a 3" pipe is welded to the top plate and extends to the bottom of the sump. This means all returning oil flows directly past the pickup, and any oil surge from the ...

Valve Caps
These are possibly ok for a road engine, but I did have an instance where the valve collets pulled right through the cap, and also others pulled further down into the caps. I would not use them if I could help it.

I think the photo is of Ian Cowies motor in Australia. On my motor I have made steel main bearing caps which extend to the bottom face of the block. These are retained by long nuts fitted to studs in the block. I have machined the block and the top of the bearing caps and the nuts level. The plate is ...

Oil Feed
It is not a problem that would arise providing the jackshaft it timed correctly, and not a problem I have experienced myself as I have always timed the jackshaft. There is a mark on the front jackshaft sprocket which aligns between two timing cover? bolt holes on the front of the engine.Perhaps ...

Bearings
I have just finished rebuilding the motor in my Sprint, and primed the engine oil system using the drysump scavenge pump rotated by a small drill. I had a pressure gauge on it and as I spun the pump, the pressure went to well over 120 psi as there is no relief valve on the scavenge side.I wanted to ...

Bearings
You can Nitride a crank anytime. They heat it to approx 600 degrees C and let it soak in an atmosphere of ammonia gas to harden the surface, although not having a nitrided crank would result in wear more so than rapid bearing failure. I think it is a lack of lubricant to the bearing that has caused ...

Bearings
This does not appear to be a common fault in the Sprint engine. I think you need to go back to square one and carefully check all dimensions, ie make sure the bearing journal diameters are correct, fit the shells to the rods and measure the diameters and compare to the crankpin size and make sure ...
