Bristol Pegasus Sprint @ Castle Coombe 18/10/03
Just to let everyone know I'm flying the Dolomite flag again at Castle Coombe this coming Saturday. Sadly its the last Sprinting event of the year for me, theres a 6 month break until the next one.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

I'm Car No.11 so if you turn up at 4pm and see car number 12 on a flying lap then you missed me! Practice laps are from 9:30 ish to 12:30. timed laps start after lunch. I'll be one of the very early cars out this time. I'll be there from 7:30am and If anyone is up early I may be able to take them for a spin on the familiarisation convoy laps.

As always its free to spectate and there are lots of interesting cars some getting driven with skill (not me I hasten to add!), particularly worth a peek is Brendon Jones in the white RS2000 as he thrashes the times of the turbo cars! Always a joy to watch. There are also a shed load of TR's taking part as this event is part of the TR register Hillclimb and Sprint champoinship.

Be sure to pop over for a chat in the paddock if your there.
Good luck on Saturday. I'm very jeolous that I can't get involved properly yet. You may need to try your crash helmet on for size before the event as I reckon it will be a size too big after all that hair you have pulled out recently<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">
Hopefully my helmet will be too tight if my lap times are good!

I've sorted out the ignition timing by strobe with the programmable system now - made a hell of a difference and having a red top pump in now means the fuel can finally keep up with the engine at high rpm.
Did you have a facet solid state in their before? I don't know where I read it or if its accurate but they weren't really rated for anything over 150bhp?? Excuse my ignorance but who makes the 'red top' pumps? I don't know what Mark is going to recommend putting in mine (although I remember him suggesting having two just in case one fails) and I want to research them a bit.
Cheers.
Scott - I went for the Facet Solid State pump.

I believe Graeme went for the Interupter.

www.larkspeed.com/pages/productpages/pe ...

Both are supposed to be good for anything up to 200 bhp. but I wonder if anyone can tell me why one would be prefered to the other apart from the slight price difference.

Re: Bristol Pegasus Sprint @ Castle Coombe 18/10/03
I had the Solid state pump which I was advised was 'reliably' good for up to 160BHP capable of 25gall/hr fuel flow. The pressure developed by these type of pumps isnt great so in practice the flow rate may be reduced when the pressure drop of a torturous pipework system is considered. The red top interrupter 'works' pump I have now is capable of a much higher 35gall/hr at higher pressure development and is more suited for cars up to 200+BHP which should be in your ballpark Scott.

The interrupter pumps slow down when there is no fuel demand whereas the solid state unit keeps on pumping regrrdless of flow. Also the solid state pumps need to be mounted at tank level as they dont have much negative lift/suction. The interrupter pumps can be mounted above the tank.

My car was fine on a solid state pump when I was running a standard engine with SU's or 40DHLA's (150ish BHP) but the switch to a ported head, STR91 cam and 45's (175BHP) has meant the fuel delivery struggling to meet the demands of the fuel system at full throttle/high rpm which appears to have been cured using the interrupter pump.

ok
Thanks for the explanation. The one I had on mine made a 'ticking' sound all the time which was quite handy as at least you knew it was working.

I'll see if i can find where on the net they were criticised and for what reasons. The proof is in the pudding I suppose and if you are both happy with yours and I didn't see a problem with mine (I think I remember seeing a receipt for a Facet pump) then why try something else?
Re: ok
I forgot to say both types were made by Facet. They've been around for Donkey's and have a good reputation.

Also the interuppter pumps are a fair bit noisier but when your talking about a stripped out race car who gives a toss.
That was fun!
'twas an interesting Sprint today - because of the daft practice arrangements I only had one practice session which was one timed lap and one untimed flying lap.

I was out on the track about 9:30am when it was about 5 degrees and misty. The car was sliding about all over the bloody place - it wasnt a pleasant experience. My 'freebie' race tyres were not suited to these conditions and didnt really warm up until the last few corners!

The timed runs were more fun - i got an extra run - i think due to dodgy lap timing gear - and I improved on the mornings lap time by about 5 seconds thanks to a warmer track.

Yet again I'm lagging a way back from the more serious competitors in my class by about 10 seconds a lap. I'm convinced its mainly due to being a relative novice and a complete lack of traction exiting high speed corners due to a non slippy axle. My problems are compounded further by the crap 2nd/3rd ratios of the standard box. New Yoko A032R supersoft compound tyres are on my shopping list over the winter and the search for an LSD axle with a 4.1 ratio cwp for less than £500 will go on (I wonder who might have one of those then<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> - clue - men in tights <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ) .

Gearbox Ratios
If you can afford it, there is also a fix for the "crap" 2nd/3rd ratio problem. WIDE RATIO GEAR SET. We use it and highly recommend it.

Its on my list of wants.

Unfortunatley my wifes list of wants is somewhat different and involves holidays, carpets and christmas!

The Sprint
It must be quite frustrating Graeme, having spent time and money getting some extra oomph out of the engine only not to be able to get it to lay the power down (at least out of corners anyway).

Is the proiblem with 2nd and 3 rd gear that on some corners you are nearly revving out in second but taking third would mean that you were too far down the rev range to be in the power?

I hope it was still an enjoyable experience. I'd be interested to know where you source your 32r's from and cost when you get around to it. They do three compunds of the 32r don't they? I'm not sure which one to go for on mine as I will be driving to the events on them and don't know how quickly the softest compund will wear.
Re: The Sprint
Yep thats exactly the problem with the gearing - I'm taking the chicanes at about 50 to 60 which in 2nd is above my 6500rpm limit but only about 4K in 3rd and the engine doesnt really work properly below 4.5K. If 2nd could hit 65 and 3rd would rev a bit higher as with Marks kit it would probably be worth a couple of seconds as most circuits have a few corners/chicanes that I would take at 50-60 mph.

It was still great fun even though i moan about all the cars weaknessess and how crap i am but interestingly the guys putting in class record times always moan about something wrong with the lap or the car - if i was happy i suppose i have nothing to aim at next year!

As for the Yoko A032R's for Sprinting/Hillclimbing the supersoft compound is the one to go for to get heat into the tyres really quick. For 185/60R13 sizes i think you can only get soft or supersoft - for racing the soft compound would probably suit you better and last longer.
If you want to get 64 in second why not arrange for o/d second gear that should take it that far up surely? Don't know how long the od would last though <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

I've got the facility there but I wouldnt use it on the track 'just in case'.

The gearbox internals haven't been touched in 9 years so i'm a bit nervous about abusing it too much.
