Alternative axles

#1 Post by SMIFTER » Thu Jul 31, 2003 5:56 pm

Darren - you've been a bit quiet of late.

How tricky was your axle swap?

I'm considering getting an axle off a Capri 2.8i Special and fitting that as they have LSD's as standard and are ratio'd for 13" wheels.

I think you will find the capri axle is too wide<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Thanks for stating the obvious<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Its about 5" wider than a Sprint Axle. As standard Sprint wheels sit about 1" within the arches with a wide axle they will protrude about 1.5" each side - not too severe. I'm allowing to cut my arches and make some custom wheel arch extensions to go on. There are some obvious issues about wheel pcd's and brakes etc which can be fairly easily overcome.

A wider track should give handling benefits much needed at the back end anyway and give it a more agressive look. I'm looking into other ways of widening front track to match.

Darren's car has a Hilux axle - again wider than a Sprint item. I was wondering how he fitted it and if it was "just" a case of welding on the mounts from a Dolly Axle or if he's uses a totally different linkage.

Not been on here much latley as im doing major mods to the Dolly <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Taking all my time too many late nights.
The Hilux axle is 1/2" wider each side than the dolly axle,
I Welded the dolly outer mounts onto it ,
The inners are up to u but i used straight bars and rose joints on the top, welded some new brackets to the body , And fit a panhared rod if you dont have one ,(much more predictable on the limit)
Thanks for the info

So your inner tie bars are straight Parallel to the trailing arms? Interesting.

I was thinking of rewelding the standard tie bar brackets but getting the location right could be tricky. I like the idea of rose jointed bars - they could be made adjustable too.

I was looking at the hilux axles but the ratio would give me a top speed of about 90mph with 13" slicks!!

Your wheels extend quite far - must be all in the offset of the wheels.

Cheers

Graeme

my tie bars are adjustable
I have some new crown wheels and pinions from the states for my axle they make the gearing acceptagle,
My rear wheels are 10.5 " wide and they do have quite an offset

roll centre height

#9 Post by Dave » Tue Dec 02, 2003 10:07 pm

Smifter, try a search on suspension roll centre height, should find the theory about angles etc. IIRC lowering the rear suspension RAISES the roll centre height because the rods are angled, and this negates some (all??) of the benefits of lowering.

axles

#10 Post by Dave » Tue Dec 02, 2003 10:12 pm

The guy Richard is trying to get some info out of, who was involved with the works sprints was saying something about bedford comma cf axles I don't know why though! unless they were bulletproof ,low ratio with LSD and a straight swap which seems unlikely with a van axle<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">
