Good point about the piggy. You think I'd be more tactful considering I was a veggy for 12 years (and no I didn't eat chicken or fish either).

To be honest Martin, if track time was reduced it would still be plenty. I would think 5 cars on track at any one time with 10 laps each would be sufficient. My only concern is that any more than 5 cars out on track will be quite busy. If the cars aren't matched particularly well by driver ability and vehicle performance then there will be alot of having to hold back to either pass somebody in a safe place or backing off to let a faster person get past. That's a pain in the backside and as we saw at Keevil, the slower people get hacked off with their flow being disrupted every 30 seconds to let someone by, they then refuse to yield and it becomes a bit close.

The day I did at Goodwood operated an open Pit Lane with a maximum of 5 cars out on track at any one point and the 5 cars would be flagged in after 5 laps. At that point you could come in and join the que in Pit lane straight away and wait to get out for another 5 laps. I got around 50 laps in that day and I stopped for lunch and went on a skid pan course for 20 minutes as well. The gaps between vehicles meant that over a 5 lap period, only a few cars had the performance to make up the 20 seconds or so to the next vehicle and therefore everyone was happy. A lap at Goodwood was around 1 minute 45 in the Mini but goodwood is double the length of anglesey so 5 cars on track is probably only going to have 10 seconds between each vehicle???

Don't know what anyone else's thoughts are. Having only ever been on track twice, my view is somewhat limited.

Dave, if you are looking in, how do you see it working?
Pigs bum sandwiches

#17 Post by SMIFTER » Wed Jan 07, 2004 1:28 pm

5 cars on the track isnt many, 10 is still a very small figure as the start can be staggered.

When we go Sprinting, there are usually 3-4 cars on track at the same time and you never catch up with anyone (but thats only 2 laps).

As a comparison, the Castle Coombe action suicide days have 30 to 35 cars on track at once which is entertaining to say the least and way too many cars but usually OK providing nobody thinks they are actually racing.

So 10 or even 15 cars at once can be fine provided everyone is sensible and courteous.

In terms of numbers of laps I wont be staying out for any more than 5 laps. More than that becomes wearing on both car and driver and is a lot to ask from the brakes of a road car. Bear in mind that most club level racing only lasts 10 to 15 laps in a fully sorted race car.

My preference is to have 6 No. 20 minute sessions in the morning of 10 cars at a time and in the afternoon once the desparation to get on track has worn off have an upper limit of 10 cars on track at once and an open pit lane - and flag off anyone who is on track for an excessive time. This allows to to go out for a couple of laps, come back in for adjustments/bog or pig's bum sandwich and go back out as and when you please rather than having to sit and queue for 20 minutes each time you want to go on track.
(as it was at Keevil).

What do you think??

Graeme

p.s. Scott - tell your Mrs that my better half will be there too.
Great Day

#20 Post by benran » Wed Jan 07, 2004 6:37 pm

Hi to every body,
First let me say thank you, to you all for your comments and humour,
It is great to be part of a forum that is well supported.
The Track Day is organised by Trac Mon and myself and a very good friend,
BUT the tack day is all of you, your comments and ideas are what will make it a day to remember, I have a meeting with the track organisers the 2nd week in Feb, where upon I will show them all your comments and see what they think can be done to accommodate all your ideas into the program.
So please keep the ideas coming this way, so that we can get as much as possible right on the day, I know I will make some mistakes a long the line, but with your help I can keep them to a minimum.
Till now the only one I think, who will not have a complaint will be the piggy.
I will keep you all updated as news come in to me,

Best Regards Dave.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">

P.S.... Scott… I think you have some good ideas, but I don’t think you will be happy driving 10 seconds behind, watching the back-side on my TR6, but then again we are all Triumph NUTS, ( and I have lost some in the past ) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">
Just spoke to Dave - (who by the way will be on the Grove components stand at Stoneleigh - if you want to see his ugly mug that is...) and me and the misses will be coming along in the sprint.
Ben.
Excellent

#22 Post by Carsreunited » Wed Jan 07, 2004 11:43 pm

Looks like there will be a a good group of us going.

I had a quick look on the net for exact lap times at Anglesey and it looks as if a 1 minute lap would be a good guide for our cars. Caterham R500's do it in 47 seconds and class c MGB's get around in 57 seconds. I reckon 20 minutes on track in one go is going to be a bit too much especially when you consider that the brakes will get a good workout on such a short track. No major long straights for them to cool down on.

My preference would be 12-15 laps in one dollup and 6 groups as Graeme has suggested.

Track Mon must know what on track group sizes work so it might be best to leave it to the professionals on that count.

What plans do people have? Turn up on the day? Stay in a B+B the night before? Tenting on track the night before? We will be in a tent which should be fun. Have to brush up on the lyrics of Kum by Ya (sp?) and gin gan gooly.

Mrs S isnt so sure - shes not used to slumming it. I might have to go show shopping again to persuade her.
I was given that name as my Mum thought that he was the best looking Thunderbird (Yep, she is certifiable) not because I'm a sweaty. Although, I was born in Corby where they all have scottish accents. Very Strange.

So, apart from your TR6, what other motors are going to be there for a bit of Dolomite humiliation<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">
Dolomite Humiliation

#30 Post by Carsreunited » Fri Jan 23, 2004 6:50 pm

Dave (benran)

That was actually a gentler quip than expected. I thought something along the lines of dolomite humiliation being the point in which the owner takes it out on track etc.

Anyway, looking forward to a couple of lady's in TR7's whooping my proverbial. Quite how they are going to manage putting a crash helmet on and getting 'helmet hair' without having a complete nervous breakdown I don't quite know., but hey...... you mentioned paramedics will be attending so why should I worry too much?

I've got the feeling, the smaller nimbler vehicles like Spitfires are going to fair better around Anglesey. Looks more like a Kart track in some respects. Could be some very annoyed big car owners having to yield to ladies in TR7'S!!

And username Dave, that would be a real laugh. The trouble is Darren's car looks like a wolf in wolves clothing. I suppose we could all stand there and say that it's standard apart from the Grp 2 arches and wider rubber! Maybe they wouldn't know the difference. It would be great if Darren booked it up though. Are you intersted or booked yourself??
