Hill climbing and Sprinting

#1 Post by dollysteve » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:10 am

I have just sent off my application to a couple of motor clubs and sent off to the MSA for my national B speed licence so hopefully I will be starting to do some events come the new year, if the car is finished maybe even this year, looks like a lot of fun and hopefull will push me towards my ultimate goal of doing stage rallies. Not sure how i`ll get on at this but i`ll keep you posted and get some pics of the car on once it`s finished.
Well done mate. It's starting to be quite a busy section of the club now. With Bob doing some racing and you getting involved in sprinting etc its effectively doubled the active competition participants!

Scott, thanks for the encouragement. I`m quite nervous to be honest, most of the racing I have done didn`t require any special licenses so although it`s only a Nat B non race licence it all seems very official. If I can help raise the profile of Dolly`s in racing it has to be a good thing and perhaps it will get more members involved, it`s a cheap way to get in to motor sport, basically you could turn up in a 1300 dolly and do an event, there is a class that caters for almost everything. Just out of interest what MSA licence do you have Scott.

Good luck with the Sprinting - I had a lot of fun when I dabbled in it before i killed my car although me and my Sprint weren't at all competitive against some seriously well set up RS2000's with very expereinced racers driving them.

The worst bit is scrutineering - some of the scrutineers are great people, some are complete twots with something to prove.

I guess your entering production road car class. The key to success is tyres and late braking. Yoko A032R supersofts are used by all in the know for Sprinting (my car went kaput before i could try them on mine!).
In it`s current state i`m not sure how they would class my car as it`s lowered and poly bushed all round along with solid rack mounts and jigsaw steering coupling, engine wise I have the TR7 lump to go in so i`m guessing that would put me in mod prod, to be honest i`m not worried about winning at the moment and fully expect to get trounced by all and sundry, atleast for the first few outings until i`m addicted, then i`ll start chasing more power.

Licence

#6 Post by Carsreunited » Tue Oct 18, 2005 2:47 pm

Mines a Race National 'B'.

I've got a full set of AO32r supersofts off the wheels which have done 10 laps of Snetterton. I paid about £65 a corner.

Make me a sensible offer and I'll bring them to the restoration show (if you are coming). They are 185/60/13's. Thought I would need them for doing races with the TR/TSSC but I've decided not to go banger racing with them.

Cheers,
Steve - your car should be fine in production class, just declare it as an 1850. Minor mods are allowed but you must have all seats, door cards (its all in the blue book) Mine always went in production class OK and that had some pretty substantial mods including coilover suspension, sierra brakes, debumpered, and a small matter of an STR91 cam and twin 45's.

Of course if you start winning the officials may look at your car more closely....
Hopefully i`ll receive my licence and blue book in the next couple of weeks, then I can start to prep the car and get the engine swap underway.
Scott I would be interested in the tyres but I really don`t know if i`m definatley going to be able to go to the resto show and at the moment my flat keeps eating all my cash.

Don't you get the licence at the start of 2006? I thought they were January to December things?

I'm in no rush to get rid of the tyres so just let me know whenever. They are sitting in a dark garage so won't be going off.
You still get your licence but from what I understand it will still expire on the 31st december, a bit like road tax I guess...
Well hopefully i`ll be finished doing decorating in the next few weeks so if it`s ok i`ll drop you an e-mail about the tyres sometime soon. I have just been looking at your car on Triumph owners and your volvo rad installation, is that the normal Dolly kenlowe fan and what Volvo was the rad from.

Have a look at www.nfauto.co.uk

They advertise in PPC. I got the fan from them (10" i Think for the original sprint rad, 12 or even 14 would probably be better on the Volvo rad)

The fan was £50 plus a fiver for the fitting kit. They go on and come off easy enough. I've used the dame fitting kit when I put it on the volvo rad.

I think the rad came from a 740 auto (might be a 760?). It has an inbuilt oil cooler I assume for the gearbox oil but I haven't quite workied out if I'm going to make use of that yet. Might see how the oil temps go first. Don't want to overcool the oil.
thanks Scott, i'll look in to that a bit more. Oh I just asked my dad about the oil cooler, (he used to be a Volvo master Technician) he said it's for the auto box and it wouldn,t be suitable for the engine as it's simply a single tube that runs through the rad, infact it apparantley isn't much use on an autbox.
