Groovy Baby!!
Groovy Baby!!
Excellent racing at Mallory Park yesterday. I took my two lads (6 and 5) and they were shouting for Ken Clarke and Bob Kett in their dolomites. Ken got off to a good start and got up to second place, but slipped back to 6th (what happened Ken?). Not sure whether Bob finished higher than he qualified, but he ran round reliably and avoided trouble, which not everyone managed. Good to see some dollies flying the flag. I've got some photos so I'll have to find somewhere to host them.

Best race had to be the last one where the Taydec spent all the race trying to get past the Camaro and finally managed it with just over a lap to go and held on for the win.

Scott, when are you going to join in the fun again?
Next year David. This season's over unfortunately.

Next year the car WILL be reliable or I might be tempted to do something stupid with it like turn it back into a road car!

Glad you had a good day and glad to hear Bob Kett got out. I had no idea he was racing.
Re Groovy Baby !!
Well Scott, it was all your doing really! I followed your progress with interest, and when we had that track day together at Snetterton well that made my mind up.
I took my ARDS test at Mallory and thought it would be a good place for my first meeting.
All I wanted to do was get a finish [and a signiture] which thankfully I did.
Ken Clarke was a real help with driving tips and setup- top bloke.
My car still has astandard diff and standard discs, these are soon to be replaced![by Ken]
Don't give up Scott, that feeling you get after arace just cant be beat.

Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
Well done Mate. I'm really pleased. Just glad someone else has got the bug too. Can't wait to have a complete race rather than a very frustrating 12 out of 14 laps! How did you do in the race? I don't know if the results are on MST. I know from the track-day you were pretty rapid, especially considering your set-up.

Any pictures for us? What are your plans for next year? I know Ken did a few of the bigger CTCRC rounds and groovy baby. Are you going to do the same?

So many questions!
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
Any details on your set up Bob? I must say the car looked pretty smart inside and out. My older son was particularly impressed with your belts (his name is Luke). Who did the preparation? Is the shell seam welded? What suspension and engine specs do you run? Sorry about all the questions, I'm hoping you'll say you've done it all for much less than Scott!
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
David - my car is an ex-British production saloon car racer, I bought it as a sorry - looking, but very solid runner, and I've spent the last 20 months basically restoring it. I've added twin 45 DCOE Webbers (it was on SU's), tranny ignition, race leads, ally radiator, electric fan, poly bushes and race exhaust.

The engine was blue-printed before I got it and I think it has a standard head with an 091 cam, baffled sump and high pressure oil pump.

The suspension is coil over shocks with ajustable ride height but I don't know what make they are! The shell is not seam welded. I also added some racing essentials like an F.!.A. seat, plumbed in extinguisher, battery moved to boot, shift light etc.

Although its been on rolling road, that showed 200 + BHP, this is obviously way - out, I estimate its got 150 - 160 BHP max.

Scott- The race was very eventful, I qualified 22nd out of 26! And finished 14th, there was a wreck on almost every corner, so I basically finished last!!

The most interesting part of the race was when somebody dropped a mixture of oil and fuel and antifreeze all over the track leading up to and around the hairpin, I remember sliding into the hairpin with all four wheels locked up whilst being the filling in a Mustang and Camaro sandwich!!!

Next year I will definitely do some more "Groovy Baby" - good value really as you get a 30 minute race, 15 minutes practice and FREE FOOD! Also I will do some CTCRC rounds.

Really looking forward to seeing you out there as well, stick at it mate. And I have a feeling we may see David out there too!
PS
David - my car is much less lower spec. than Scott's therefore it cost me less, although mine is an on-going development so it never stops!
I think its a good idea to buy an ex-racer like the one mentioned elsewhere on this site it sounds like a very good deal indeed.
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
The car is very smart Bob and is a credit to you. How much of the work did you do yourself? It's also good to see that you can get out there and get a result with a car so close to standard. What sort of LSD are you fitting? I notice the CTCRC post historic technical regs no longer restrict LSDs to plate type. And what brakes?
So glad to hear that you will be getting involved next year as well. It's such a rush isn't it? That race at Brands Hatch with the CTCRC is something else. You can't help feeling very proud sitting on the grid with a 50,000 crowd watching you!

Find out where Ken gets his cars r/roaded and if you are keen, we could go up together. If not I'll go up anyway. Mine will probably need a little fettling after the rebuild. So far I've had 220bhp and 165bhp so might as well throw another number into the equation!

You do yourself a disservice by saying that you came 14th because others fell off the track. At least you finished! Wish you'd mentioned that you were racing as I would have definitely come along to support.

Catch up with you soon no doubt.
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
Sorry about the delay...
A few more answers, David,I bought the car as an ex racer, and brought it up to current regs myself, apart from the paint, a mate of mine did that.
Ken is fitting me a Salisbury LSD and Princess 4 pot calipers with 3 litre Capri vented discs.
Scott, I think Ken uses our old friend Pete Baldwin so I think I may pass on that one. Im going to aim for next years all Triumph trackday as a warm up for next season [be nice to see 5 or 6 Sprints out there for that one]
By the way Scott did you know that you can get a signature on your licence by being a marshall for a day. I'll certainly be up for that next year.
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
6 signatures.

Some people keep them on their car a bit longer.

Bob. Are you sure he uses Pete? He made a few comments to me about his rollers being way over the top in terms of accuracy. Didn't get the impression he rated his services!

I was impressed with Aldon so may go back there. Would like to get on the same rollers that Ken uses so I can see how much under his 193 at the wheels I am.

That LSD will make a noticeable difference along with the brakes. I reckon that will give you 2 or 3 seconds around Mallory alone.
Re: Re Groovy Baby !!
I use Aldon Automotive. I used to use Trevor Shaw in daventry but unfortunately he died 18 mths ago. The figures at Aldon & Trevor are exactly the same on my car. 195 BHP @wheels. 200+ next year.

Hi Ken, nice to see you contributing to our board.

I used Aldon in June and I feel they set the car up better than Mr Baldwin. They ironed out a huge hole in my power. Saying that, you would appear to have 60bhp more than me at the wheels!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> I thought their rollers under-read, obviously they don't. I will go there again for my next set-up.
