Whats the cheapest breakdown cover you guys know of? Guessing with old cars youd all have it <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Im not interested in home call out as its far more likely to be something simple if it fails to start, and if I cant remedy it I'll come straight here <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> Its the motorway assistance I need, get me to a garage or home...

Im skint at the moment but my parents can't emphasize enough how much Ill need it for a trip to the TDCIR. or any other long distance trip really but especially as this cars only done 70 odd miles in my ownership it really would be pushin my luck <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">
I hated...
to tempt fate, but I've never had breakdown cover of any form...even for my 14 hour round trip around Cov, Brum, Kidderminster and Swansea on the M-ways..

But now I just added myself to the ranks of the RAC...probably never use them though, but better safe than sorry. Can't vouch for how good they are though!

Single car use Green Flag
If you should drive more than one car AA or RAC.

I'm with the AA as it cover's me for both cars the Motorbike.
Re: I hated...
thats to have the car picked up if over a certain distance, im sure it was 1.4 a mile but that seems like nothing! Mind you recently Ive been pushin my car alot so thats probably why <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Yer where was I, oh taken to nearest garage or home, which evers closest. Due to technical reasons its legally in my dads name but applies to whoever drives it.

Most classic policies..

Re: Always...
Try to go with the smaller companys like autohome they always use a local garage as agents so someone will be with your pretty quick. if you break down on the m.way quote the number from the white marker post or sos phone rather then saying 'i think i might be somewhere between london and leeds but i did pass a tree just now' Yes people do say those things. i'm a roadside rescue guy myself and waste lots of time loking for people who think they are somewhere else!!
WARNING If you breakdown on the M.way and don't have assistance you can be charged £120+ for a garage to come and tow you to the next exit/rest stop. and they won't even look at the fault.
Re: Always...
I know it`s temting but don`t gety the minimum cover. I was with the AA and had their minimum cover when the gearbox spat it`s innards out, basically they would only tow me to the nearest garage or home if it was within 10 miles. I was in at Wins and Co at the time which is about 45 miles from home. I was stuffed, ended up hiring a trailer and collecting the car myself as I wanted the car towed home. I joined the RAC in may this year and had to call them when the rad burst on my Fiat a few weeks ago and again this saturday when I was on my way to Silverstone in my Golf and guess what... the rebuilt gearbox with less than a thousand miles on spat it`s insides out again, fu**ing great.... Both times the RAC took over 2 hours to arrive and both times lied about when they had called the recovery truck, get AA or similar but forget the RAC, bunch of t*ssers.

Re: Breakdown Cover
Some wise stuff previously stated here. I would add that my experience of the RAC is similarly appalling. As an organisation they have in recent years concentrated on securing the female driver market with some success. They don't give a f*ck about anyone else.

AA I have only used in Europe where their 5 star eurocover is second to none and even repatriated an extensively crashed classic rally car to the UK from deep south of France for me once at absolutely no cost.

Green Flag are known for excellent initial response times but little else.

As Alun says, some of the classic insurers include breakdown cover such as my own (R H Specialist Cars). I have found the service excellent. When I broke down on the way to Gaydon earlier this year, they were with me in 22 mins from the initial phone call - not bad at all.

The smaller independent firms are a liability as they basically sub-contract everything out to local firms. This means excellent response time again, but that you end up with some tattooed oik and a sh*tty transit who has no idea about old cars. My mate has just settled out of Court with one such firm for the £9K of damage they did to his concours Model A Ford trying to tow it with said smelly tranny....
Like all such things, you pays your money and takes your choice......

Re: Breakdown Cover
don't tar all recovery drivers with the same brush. I know a hell of a lot more about older carsthen modern, i'm 34, have no tatoos, although i do have long hair ( which is tied back in a neat ponytail) i keep myself as clean as possible whilst driving my £55k's worth of top of the range slide back bed rcovery truck. have purchased at my own expense various straps etc for loading and straping cars to bed and i work for an independent company (in southampton). Itake great pride in fixing cars at the roadside if i can or getting the car and travellers to their home/garage .I have been doing this job for 18 months and have not once caused any damage to cars or property nor received complaints. But i do agree with getting full cover as recovery is expnsive if you have to pay.

We've all got a story...
about the various breakdonw services...
Ive been with the AA a BERY long time...
They've always been good until this year...
I broke down on the A316...one of the busiest of Londons arterial roads, and gave clear instructions as to where I was...Saw 2 patrol vans drive past and 2 hours later the sub contracted garage had failed to turn up...lied to AA and said they couldnt find me. Not best pleased I towed it myself with my onw Landie.
Then 2 weeks ago the Landie blew a head gasket. Useless idiot of a patrol man turns up in ten minutes and organises a relay that takes 5 hours to come....and fails to organise me the onward car I pay for cos its the weekend and I aint got my license. Totally useless!.
Sub contracted relay co said they were offered the job and declined it as they couldnt do it for 2 hours...AA books them anyway and meantime they get another call so I have to wait! And they leave me there for 5 hours and tell me nothing! And 2 relay trucks go past empty!
Its interesting the RAC are no better. I was thinking of going to them next time. What really tee'ed me off with both outfits is that when I was looking for a job, both told me I wasnt suitable. Now pardon me but I think I know more about fixing cars and customer service than any patrolman I've ever had. I always have to tell them whats wrong...and they usually take 10 minutes at least to agree with me! Some of the good ones are just about my equal on diagnosis....the worst are useless and dangerous. So maybe I didnt get the job cos I'm too good. Anyway stuff em all cos Ive now got a far better job. The trouble is both the AA and RAC are now owned by cheapskates who only see the bottom line. Shame 2 more of our great British names are on the way down.
Re: We've all got a story...
I guess it's a bit of pot luck, really. Most of the subcontracting in Bath is done by the local massive Vauxhall dealer, and they're actually pretty good for response times and stuff. I was even fairly impressed when driving a mate's MGB with a knackered alternator that the guy knew where the battery was.
