Goodwood Revival....

#1 Post by dollysteve » Mon Sep 19, 2005 8:24 am

Did anyone else think the revival wasn`t as good as previous years, the racing was as good as ever but there seemed to be something lacking this year, can`t quite put my finger on it. Martin I think I saw your 1300 fwd, light blue one????? I also saw my mates old T2000 mk1 in the pre 66 car park. I repainted this car about 4 years ago, it`s the earliest registered mk1 2000 left.

I was indeed the wedgewood blue 1300 parked conveniently right beside the walkway into the course.

Overall, I thought it was a great day. The crowds were much bigger and the queue for the loos at times agonising (literally!). The racing was good fun, especially the saloons in the afternoon, and the bikes were better this year too, with a particularly exciting finish.

I thought an awful lot of time was wasted clearing up what was a really rather minor shunt in the first race (brooklands trophy), but otherwise no complaints. The air display was the nuts this year too.

It's an expensive day - by the time you factor in fuel, a burger, a couple of beers and the entry fee there is not much change out of £80 a head, but it is a good day and the only opportunity ever anywhere to see that much classic machinery in one place at the same time and being driven in anger. For me, the car park alone is worth the entry fee!

Having done both now, I would say that on balance the Saturday is actually the better day to go. I have begun to formulate plans for a racing 1300 as a result so it can't be bad. I received a number of very nice comments about the car, which added to the day.

Your car did look lovely. I too have been having visions of a racing 1300. I notice that AVO list coil overs for it. I`m thinking a single weber, straight through exhaust, head work, lumpy cam, all lightened, balanced etc. Something along the lines of the SAH tuning 1300. I think the biggest prob would be keeping the gfearbox in one piece.
I did have a great time both days I just thought that it wasn`t as good as last year, maybe it`s just me. I have to agree it`s an expensive day out but worth every penny just to Stirling Moss drifting a Ferrari 250 GTO through St marys and listening to the noise the e-type emanuelle pirro was hammering

Thanks for your kind remarks about the 1300.

You are right about the noise - fantastic doesn't do it justice.

I agree with your thoughts about a racer. My worry initially (apart from inconsequential nonsense like where the hell to find the money...) was the rotoflex couplings. I have in mind around 120 bhp and the strengthened Hillman Imp type rotoflexes are not available in the larger (Triumph) size.
Maybe the only way is to have a go.....

Seeing the lovely 1300 was great - I note the registration number on the pre-66 parking was nicely, hmmm hidden, then again how a Stag got in there and a few other newies.

As for the minor shunt - Brooklands Trophy - surely you mean the Goodwood Trophy - race 1 Saturday, we were sitting in the Chicane Grandstand when Willie Green lost the 1948 Maserati 4CLT, hit the tyre wall to the right of the grandstand, flipped the car, was thrown out (no belts that lot, brave or stupid)- as we all stood up in the grandstand to get a better view of the Maserati land behind Willie and then proceed to run him over - at which point we all sat down rather subdued. How he got away with only a broken leg god alone knows. I was a few hours before news that he was ok(ish) came through.

Then again on Sunday we did see Bob Sherring put Lord March's Galaxie into the tyre wall at Woodcote - the gravel trap does not really slow up 2 tons of 7 litre V8 when its doing a ton, the Galaxie was 7 foot wide, and is now 5 foot wide, Bob was just a little dazed.

Great three days, fantastic racing, Richard Lloyds Spitfire in the Fordwater Trophy was going great. Where else can you see Jackie Steward, Peter Brock on three wheels around Woodcote lap after lap in his Stingray, Wizzo Williams completely sideways through the chicane in his Cobra, Bobby Rahal, Bell, Moss, the froggies Henri and Patrick, Jochen Mass...bloody hell I'm looking forward to next year already.

And as ever the Spitfires, Mustang, Thunderbolt, Hawk, B17, Vikers Vimy etc. all put on a great air show.
Ben,

Nice to hear your observations. I too saw a couple of Stags in the pre-66 enclosure, and a Robin Hood kit car for goodness sake!

Funny how two people can observe the same incident in different ways (ref the Willie Green crash). I was standing at Woodcote, saw him thrown out and the car appear to run him over though it was difficult to tell whether it got him or just missed him from that angle. He was evidently conscious though (waved his arms profusely to request assistance), and the damage to the car seen later up close in the paddock was not severe. I was standing right beside a loudspeaker and the commentator announced that Willie was "basically fine and only had a broken leg" as the ambulance left the circuit. I therefore in my mind put it down as a minor shunt. They then took nearly 40 minutes to get the track ready for a restart, which itself only lasted another three or four laps! You are right though - it was an amazingly lucky escape.

I had a feeling one of the Galaxies might part company with the tarmac on the Sunday as there were a couple of very hairy moments with them at Woodcote on the Saturday.

How Whizzo got that Cooper S round so fast is beyond me, though he sneakily admitted in the paddock that it was a 1380cc. Still bloody quick though. Rene Arnoux was having some fun too.

At the time of the Willie Green Accident I had only just got in tothe car park, we got stuck in a traffic jam so even though we left plenty of time to get there we were late getting in to the circuit, it did sound nasty. I was standing between st marys and Lavant mostly on sunday and got some very good views of the Galaxies getting very out of shape and then seeeing rae davies mini screaming up behind them through the corners only to be outdragged on the straights, amazing to see!!!! I too saw the yellow stag in the car park. also a pug 406.
