heater..........or not as the case is

#1 Post by no41sprint » Fri Sep 23, 2005 1:39 pm

need some advice please.my sprint is overheating for the first time,it goes to "h" on the temp gauge and then drops to 3/4..but the heater blows cold air out.when the heater blew hot air out before, the temp gauge stayed at half way.i cant understand that if the engine is so hot, why the heater is cold.
any ideas pls?

Check your top and bottom rad hoses - and the rad itself. If they are all cold you have a dead water pump.
And the more obvious check of the water level if you haven't already.
Then it might be worth doing a compression test, as your head gasket might have blown. The other things are much more likely, though.

may not be opening properly.
Water pump impellor loose on spindle...rare fault but possible.

Air lock?

The heater hoses may be kinked or just blocked by years of limescale.
I had similar symptoms on the stag which turned out to be the thermostat sticking closed. Sometimes it would open and the temp would dive back down, at others it would just boil! I take it you have replaced it during your drain down and refill? For the sake of £3 its worth it.
