my engine is overheating, thought it was lack of water as heater was blowing cold, now blows hot.......but water now comes out of the expansion tank like a waterfall.it is going to sound like a stupid question, but how do u know if you have too much water in ? The engine seemed to work ok but then lost power and a loud banging is heard from the engine but only when driving.at idle it doesnt knock at all.i have checked the oil and is ok.
the temp guage has suddenly stopped working too.
any ideas where to start would be appreciated.
Maybe you have an airlock, not sure what the loud banging would be.

if an airlock, what is the best way to "bleed".i have heard that if there is air in the system it does produce a knock....so hopefully it wont be any more serious than that.
I always found that taking the filler plug and running the car up to temperature helps get rid of airlocks, then just keep topping up with water.

Its easy...
Just have enough in the exp tank to cover the inlet pipe.
Then fill via the plug on top of the thermostat cover. When full (trickle it in fairly slowly) Just sqeeze the bottom hose and all the bubbles come out in the expansion tank and coolant is sucked back into the system.
If your exp tank is presurising when the engine is running but not hot it means you have a blown head gasket unfortunately. If the engine runs without prssurising straight away you should be okay. Run it up to temp and you should feel the rad get warm as the thermostat opens, and hot air come out of the heater. If it doesnt get warm you have a blocked thermostat as the first check and a disfunctional water pump as the much less likely second cause.
