Help required, prove me right :D
Help required, prove me right :D
As i mentioned in my other thread last week, my workmate has just become the proud owner of a 1986 XR2 (1.6 CVH engine.)

He has been doing the wise thing, oil and filters, plugs and cambelt...but... when he came to do the cambelt, a bolt dropped into the lower cambelt cover, and cannot be retreived without either a) turning the car upside down and shaking it or b) removing the lower cambelt cover. The problem with the lower cambelt cover is this: the crankshaft pulley has to come off. He has just phoned me with his problem, and to be quite honest, I haven't a clue. He has the car in gear, and everytime he exerts a little pressure on the pulley bolt, the pulley turns and the wheels turn. He has even had another guy holding the wheels, but, guess what, the crankshaft pulley still turns.

Well, i admitted that i couldn't help him much; the Haynes manual is wonderfully vague apparently, and apart from the "in gear, hold the wheels trick", i wouldn't know what else to try.

So, we made a bet. (He has just joined the XROC). I have bet him i can get a working answer from the Dolly Club before he gets one on the XR forums. The prize? One beer.

Gentlemen, to your keyboards. I promise to share the prize with you all. Next meet i will bring along 26 egg cups and a can of Stella Artois.

We have nothing to lose, but everything to prove. Our honour is at stake here...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

I have access to a Hi-ab truck so bring it to southampton and we'll try the 'upside down and shake it out'. even if it doesn't work it will give you something to laff about down the pub.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">
Sorry thats my only suggestion.
You need it on the ground with the handbrake on and in top gear. If the handbrake starts to slip put chocks under the wheels too. Took a 6 foot tommy bar extension with me bouncing on it to break mine out on the sprint.

The other way is to let the car do the work. Look at which way the engine turns when running. If his luck is in (it would be if he'd bought a Sprint) he can put a bar on the bolt, turn the engine by hand until the bar rests against a chassis member and then turn it over on the starter. REMOVE HT LEADS FIRST!
Yest...
The starter motor should be strong enough if a large socket and tommy bar is used braced against a suitable piece of structure. I use this as the method of choice on slant 4 engined cars now when the chain needs doing.
The other way is to remove starter and lock the flywheel ring gear with a suitable large flat screwdriver against the block, then he nut can be undone.
Its a complete waste of time using the gearbox as the gearing works against you. Also run the risk of damaging teeth. Sump off make even work more easilly on a tranverse cvh. Failing that cant he just loosen the belt cover and rotate it round so the bolts drop out?
Thanks guys, i was right. You came up with the goods before the XR forums <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I guess we will do the tommy bar/cross member bit in the morning, and hit the starter.

Best make sure we have it statically timed first eh? Valve strike is a pain in the pocket.

the Cover is held on by the pulley, so it isnt really an option, especially considering that the timing marks are on the cover, so we can't just trash it off.

and magnet on a string...bleh, would if we could, the clearance isn't big enough for an oompah loompahs finger.

I'll fetch the stella and the eggcups to the next meet.
Why cant you use a good old fashion Impact Gun,
It will zip that bolt undone in a tick.
Re: Yest...
Wasn't enough room for an impact gun, not even enough for a socket and T-Bar.

Ring spanner fitted, rested against the alternator, 5th gear, handbrake and foot brake.

Light blue touchpaper, stand well back....

Success !!!!
