Hmmm
How would leaving your exhaust by a computer give you that figure, especially if the exhaust has been removed from the car?<br>

theoretically you could but you would have to measure the fuel precisely as well as the emissions to acertain the exact mpg. Not sure how modern car comps work it out though they aren't terribly accurate. I figure as they control the fuel so precisely they can work out the mpg. The range must work on a weight of fuel calculation as obviously the car cannot count the litres as they go in the tank. Theoretically this could be applied to an old car. Say you have a full tank of fuel (weight of which can be calculated)you drive onto a weighbridge, drive for a period then back onto the scales you should get a figure.I believe this is how the official tests are calculated, weight that is.<br>

I suggest that short of developing some kind of supercomputer you'll have to stick to brimming the tank for your mpg!

Ive had 3 good ideas that have been sitting in the back of my head for a while and when I done research in to them they've all been invented to some extent! <br>

Current idea is to devise some kind of mini computer you can hook up to any car and it will tell you your fuel consumption, range, fuel in the tank etc etc.... <br>

If you are an elecrically minded person have a flick through a Haynes manual for a car with such equipment fitted, wiring diagrams should give you an idea of how they work. <br>

The problem with inventions is that they have mostly been invented except for time machines, devices to ward of cats that crap in your garden (that actually work) and any device connected with alchemy. Instead people sit around and invent such products as "Nivea for Men Hair removal cream" that is a genuine product. How about developing "Nivea for Men Hair growing cream" Actually i'd take the time machine and accept that hair loss is one of those things.

Adam. All you need is a flow meter to measure fuel use and a way of measuring wheel speed. It has been done before of course. And yes, modern cars know how much fuel they're using from the injector pulse width.<br>

My modern car as with a lot of newer cars tells me what mpg im doing what road im on, where the trfafic jams are,how many miles before i run out of fuel, where the police cars are,what cd im listening to(as if i didn't know what cds i put in) and even tells me the time.<br>

If you look at the chemical analysis of how petrol burns you will see that on combustion it produces exactly 10 times its own weight in water. Therefore, all you need to do is drag a bowser behind you of known net weight and collect all the water from the exhaust into it. Then, having the bowser attached to the car with a spring you can apply Hookes Law in measuring the length of the spring after defined mileage to determine what resistance the bowser is adding to the spring, taking into account wind and rolling resistances and speed of course to find out what the bowser weighs, therefore how much the water weighs, divide by 10 and hey presto what weight of fuel has been used. Take the density of fuel at the ambient air temperature from a handy table (could be sellotaped to the bowser for convenience) to calculate the volume used and therefore mpg or kmpl.<br>

This is a sustainable green solution as you could water the garden or take a bath with the by-product, thereby reducing the demand on the domestic water cycle.<br>

to do it properly you'd need fuel injection.<br>

Why not fit fuel injection? I think the TR7 injection manifold would fit, you could use megasquirt and bits from a scrapyard and get it all done for £300 ish.<br>
