You know Alun was slagging Purple TVR's that look like Metro's, well look what I've just got. (bit concerned he hasn't pulled it from the auction yet)

PS. I'm whispering because my wife doesn't know that I've part exchanged her Mini for it..................

2k hey Adam? You could get a nice Sprint with that. Get a non age related plate and tell your Mum it's a 1990 car.

Old fart

#3 Post by KLJ895W » Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:13 am

I can't believe I'm about to say this, and I was going to say I'm not really old, then I realised I'm twice your age Adam. Anyway, I would put the money in an ISA for a rainy day, and carry on getting the dolly improved while driving it. If you put it in the garage and don't need it, you'll start pulling more and more bits off it and in a few years you'll leave home and the car will never see the road again. Where do you think all these unfinished restorations on ebay come from? Plus if you buy something newer/more powerful you'll end up spending all the money which should be going on your dolly on insurance etc for the new car. In short, don't do it. Multiple car ownership always results in one being neglected.
Or failing that, stick it in the bank and use it to run the dolly through university. old cars are quite the hit with the ladeez.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Why on earth would you want a BMW 316, for £2000 you could get something interesting, how about an Alfa 146, get the 1.7 16v, it`s got the Alfa Boxer engine, sounds fantastic, looks pretty quirky and goes well, it`s modern but interesting, fo that money you`ll get a mint low mileage one so most of the bits should still be stuck on and everything should still work. I had one for a short time and lovee it, the noise it makes is just brilliant. I can`t believe you even considered a BMW.

nah changed my mind <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Im unsure what im going to do with the money but after thinking about the neglected part I dont fancy getting anything new. A sprint though.... Tempting but cant see owning two old cars working... Ill probably stow it away for a rainy day or when the need for a sprint over powers me <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

I might get something to drive in to the ground though, like a fiesta for about £50 <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> If I do ill take a video for you lot!
Food for thought?

Get 50 quid shed with a few months mot. ('tis much fun driving a car you care nothing about).
Out the 1850 and add the cash to the pot.
Buy a reasonably solid 1300 or 1500 'mite or toledo. (cills and chassis rails important, doors, boot, bonnet, wing corners not)
Buy nice sprint.
Gut the 1300 / 1500 for track days and to learn some more on.
Buy light trailer for track car.
Buy towbar for sprint (it will be legal and capable of pulling and stopping the lightened track day car)
If parents whinge about the sprint not being as safe as a modern shopping trolley bung a cage in it.
Have fun.

Why track day a 1300 or 1500? A set of pistons costs about the same as one piston for a sprint or one and a half for an 1850. Nuff said? No? Except the roll bar which would bolt straight on its got exactly the same suspension as a Sprint and lap times are more about the corners than the straights. Have you seen Smifters article on this? This way you can very cheaply try suspension mods and setups that once tested and proven can be applied to your sprint. If you blow up your engine you are looking a 50 quid for a half decent replacement rather than 500.

How many of your mates have a seriously cool and seriously quick street car and a dedicated hard core race car too? They'll be gibbering wrecks.
A BMWs a car, and the 316 is a 1990s RWD small engined car. perfect..... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">
But then it's a car designed for a 2.3 straight 6 being driven by a 1.6 straight 4. It will be about as peppy as your 1300. As it is now.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

A Volvo 240 would be cheaper, and is also rear wheel drive.

... in a high interest 3 month access account so you can't touch it.

You'll need it to put a deposit on a house, then you can have as many cars as you want and neither parents or neighbours can tell you otherwise.

Or you could spend it on beer and lose women when you go to college...that way you could end up being 30 and still at home with Mum!

Well the list was out of date and getting rather silly in length...

I could start listing my houses now instead I suppose...

Cant Believe Scott is buying a TreVoR

Hope you've got good life insurance as most of them end up going the wrong way at high velocity (thats if they dont fall apart first<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> )

I Like the idea of a 1300 track car. Much more of a challenge to drive that quick than a car with loads of power and grip. Shame its not exactly light!
Well Graeme. I've got plenty of old cars that don't work, thought I better buy a modern one that keeps up that tradition!

Adam, are you sure that the V8 you heard wasn't firing on 6 cylinders?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">
