Richard Burns
Saddened to hear of his untimely death. Great driver, saw him early on in his career driving Subaru Legacies round Kielder stages.

Re: Richard Burns
Unbelievable. He always came across so well in interviews and wasn't at all up his own arse like some people are when they reach his level of success.

Makes you appreciate whatever time you do have left when you hear things like this.
Totally agree - barely a mention in the media.

but I suppose its to be expected from a nation of alcoholic thugs.

Got it in one....
A great loss to motorsport. I saw Richard drive whilst I was on a rally driving course in Wales, he was teaching his girlfriend/wife in 206. I personally feel that this is another example of the pedestal that football and it`s players are put on, when in reality the whole sport is corrupt and overshadowed with violence and hooliganism. When was the last time you heard of riots on the street while a motoring event was on????? I hate football.....

Talent
I agree with everything said about Richard - a true ambassador for the sport and the UK in general.

I would also like to say that George Best was one of the World's greatest players and I believe that Football would have been poorer without him.

I personaly don't agree with his actions off the pitch, however no one is perfect. I'm sure we all know someone with a drink problem, it must be a terrible afflication to have.

just my two pence worth!
Re: Talent
If the NHS can refuse to treat obease people as is the plan, it should be able to refuse livers to alchoholics!!!
Nuff said.

fine but
I think all the harsh words and fine until it happens to someone in your family or worse still you then what firing squad? Come on. Bottom line humans make mistakes even the talented ones - let him without sin cast the first stone and all that.

I say thanks George for the times when you were at the top with Man Utd. and YES you were wrong to take drink in excess but I'll bet you knew that. RIP
My father is an alchoholic (although he hasn't had a drink in 18 year's -that I know of!) and by his own admission everyday is a battle, so I think I may cast a stone or two!
What annoys me about your above post is, so the man had talent - He was a womanising drunken thug, who gave money to a terrorist organisation during the 70's (Bet you weren't aware of that!) and he is revered by thousands for a few minutes on the pitch kicking the wrong shape ball <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
If he was my father I would have slotted him myself!
I was interested to see that his son must have made his peace with him before he died so that must be good for one of them's peace of mind.
Richard Burns was in a different class being younger than me by a few months he was know doubt inspired by the same sportsmen as I.
The only British (not Irish/Welsh/Scotish) driver to win the world rally championship he was not only talented, but he had that rare human trait, modesty.
His courage too was and should be an inspiration to many, knowing he was going to die two years previously, he carried on with dignity.
So to Richard I say, wherever you are mate, I hope your still sideway's and thanks for the entertainment.

Feelings
you obviously feel very strongly about your point of view and I respect that you are entitled after all.

I do feel a sense of racism, if that is the word, when you mention not irish / welsh / scottish something I believe that Richard Burns would not have approved.

I agree with what everyone has said about Richard Burns that is not in doubt at all. All I am saying is that everyone has the right to life and to make their own mistakes and pay the price for that should their choices be wrong.

I don't think you are qualified to discuss the situation in Ireland during the 70's. However if true supporting a terrorist organisation , regardless of creed, is plainly wrong.
Re: Feelings
Oh come on Warlock (or whatever your normal username is). This was supposed to be a thread about Richard Burns. Anyone can have opinion about anything and I think you may find that Al would have a fairly clear perspective on Ireland in the 70's as would most people who have lived.
Who mentioned George Best?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

Both talented sportsmen, each dealt with the inevitable pressure differently. One coped with it, one didn't. One left us close to the top of his career, one was a hasbeen. One didn't get the chance for life after sport to take over.

Unfortunately the media in this country are obsessed with certain aspects of 'news'. I don't have a TV but even I saw too much coverage of Best's death, but heard nothing about Burns until Jod's post here.

When did George B last win a match? When did Eng-er-land last win a World Championship (football, not Rugby), when did the media last hype them up to be winners before the event without any performance related justification? When did Burns win his World Championship? Which is more relevant? Which is more newsworthy?

Oh, and NHS? I seriously doubt it! But I bet there is some poor jaundiced child somewhere that would have given it a better future...but thats my warped human opinion; I best go read Matthew again...
