My top ten classic cars.

#1 Post by algtj » Wed Nov 30, 2005 9:49 am

My top ten classic cars, read, laugh and criticise to your hearts content and of course tell us your's.
Again apologies if this has been done before. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
My list of 10 in no particular order.

Rover 216 Vitesse
I like the Rover as it reminds me of a squared off 80's Dolomite, should this have been the replacement?
Polo G40 is in the running too as this was the first car I bought after my divorce, and to me was the spiritual successor to the MK1 Golf.
Opel Manta, great handling car strangled of engine development for road cars (Where was the straight/V6) and more than an equal to a Capri.
Fiat X1/9 lovable 2 seat rollerskate made of rust.
Triumph Dolomite any model as these Italian styled cars are reliable, comfy and come in some great colours!!! Russet of course!
VW Camper, underpowered troublesome rusty heap of contemporary modern art! Much more interesting than a Renualt Espace.
Fiat 127, quick great handling mini hatch but made with filler from the factory.
Vauxhall Viva Brabham, the first car with go faster stripes?
Ford Cortina, I reckon most people have owned one....?
And last but not least, Rover P6. Beautifully styled, well built excellent road holding etc etc.......
Now shoot!!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
In no particular order my top 10 favourites are:-

Jaguar e-type S3 (never owned but have driven)
Not the purists choice but the best looking IMO

Rover SD1 (owned)
I just love em

Dolomite (own too many)
What can I say!!!!

Jaguar XKR (Never owned but have driven, very fast)
My missus works for jag so we borrowed one, the way it can lay down it`s 400bhp with such finesse is amazing and the noise of that V8 accompanied by a howling supercharger, any real petrol head couldn`t be anything but impressed.

Audi Quattro (never owned but have driven)
Fantastic handling car and I just love the off beat noise of the 5 pot at full tilt.

Aston Martin Vantage V600 (Never owned but have driven)
Worked for an Aston Dealer, well, the Audi side part of the same company and was lucky enough to be handed the keys to one. A V8 and 2 superchargers, need I say more.

Citroen DS (never owned or driven)
Absolutley beautiful

Jensen interceptor FF(never owned or driven)
In my mid a ground breaking car and they look great.
Bristol Fighter S (never owned, driven, or seen in the flesh)
Have a look at the website it is truly amazing. Beautifully engineered.

Hillman Hunter GLS (never owned but daddy has)
Favourite...series 1 4.2 fhc e-type. One day I will own one...

Triumph Stag...cos of what it could and should have been.

Range Rover....probably a P38 2.5DSE when they are old enough, but any model is best of type. Shoguns are just naff...and the Merc stuff hideous.

Mg Z magnette...good case for best all round saloon ever. Own 2 in bits

Series 3 XJ6 (4.2 Sov) - see Z magnette. Own 1 soon to be back on the road where it belongs

Rover P6 3500S - see Z magnette. Own 1 with SD1 box.

Rover SD1 - did so much so well but built by morons from rubbish metal. If only...

ADO16 - Brilliant but see SD1. Oh for one with a decent gearbox.

Dolomite - well thats a given. Sprint or 1850 only though.

BMW 3000CS - The only foreign contributor to my top 10. Once drove one and totally smitten. A CSL would maybe get in my stable one day.

I also have a soft spot for the Citroen CX and XM. If only they didnt have sub BL build quality...

Rover 216 ???!!! you must be ill<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

In no particular order my favs are a weird selection comprising:

Triumph Dolomite Sprint (of course)
Mk1 Escort RS1600 (lovely Cossie BDA power)
Daimler Dart/SP250 (beauty is in the eye of the beholder but its one of the nicest sounding v8's ever and I like the fact its unconventional)
Lancia Delta Integrale Evo (a true affordable supercar)
Any Porsche 911 with a turbo and a big wing on it (iconic)
1950's Merc 300SL Gullwing (rare and stunning)
1960's Corvette Stingray (before the yanks spoilt them)
Fiat 600 Abarth (Bonkers and beautiful)
Renault Alpine A610 V6 turbo (I can't explain why - just one of those cars I've always liked the look of)
Citroen DS - no need to explain, just look at it.

<a href="http://www.smifter1971.pwp.blueyonder.c ... >Smifter's Dolomite Sprint Website

Featherweight 1974 Dolomite Sprint - Soon to be XE'd, NOS'd, Megasquirted and 5 linked Lash up to scare myself (and my wallet) senseless

2004 Smart Roadster (company car!!) - 698cc of turbo'd adrenaline fuelled rollerskate - destined to classic status thanks to Daimler Chrysler bean counters.

1997 Audi A4 2.6 to chill out after the above and fill with baby products.....

2005 Trek 1400 (ok its not a car but still fast) -
a bit like Lance Armstrong but slower and fatter

I like the 216 as they rot even faster than Dolomites!
Seriously though, when did you last see a 216 Vitesse in half decent condition especially a series 1 car?
I had a silver series 2 Vitesse apart from rust on an 18mth old car there was a slight problem with the electrics......!
Classic in the making, and you heard it here first!!!!

Bentley R-Type Continental : the ultimate grand tourer
Ferrari 250 GT Lusso : prettiest car ever
Fiat 500 : cutest car ever, and one I've driven
Cord 812 : way ahead of its time
Triumph Dolomite : needs no explanation
Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 : massive presence and performance, even today
Porsche 924 Carrera GT : will run rings around most 911's (owned a 944)
Dodge Charger R/T : if possible with a Daisy Duke look-a-like
Rover P5B Coupe : I really want one
Land Rover Series 1 : for towing all of the above

Benoit

I don't really have a top 10, more like a top 100
Triumph Dolomite (Obviously)

Citroen DS - It's just so pretty.

Dodge Challenger R/T - Mmm.

MGBGT - I know, it shares a lot of components with a sherpa van (The current LDV convoy still has MGB interior door pulls) and has suspension from a tractor, but you can drift it round bends at high speed in a '50s racing style.

Mini - the first of my mates who learnt to drive got one of these, a C-reg 998cc model. managed to get 93mph 5 up going downhill on the M27 one afternoon. Great days.

MG Midget - Absolute hoot. Feels like 150 at 50, so 100 feels very fast indeed. It was raining and we were trying to stop rain getting into the cabin. At least that was the excuse.

Mk1 Escort - The first car I can remember my parents having. It was a two door in purple. They replaced it with a yellow Mk2 that broke down on the test drive.

Mk1 Astra - I only like this one because it was the first time I had ever seen an automatic aerial for the radio and I thought it was possibly the best thing in the world ever.

I'm going to say Ferrari 360 as no. 10 since I think all Ferraris are classics (apart from the mondial...) and this one time I heard someone accelerate from 20 to 80 in a tunnel in 2nd. Pure bliss.

1. Lamborghini Miura: No comment required. 400SV in lurid green.

2. Series I Elise, Norfolk Mustard with green leather and green roof.

3. Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV: In red or saffron. Cloverleaf of course.

4. Series II FHC E-type

5. Dolomite Sprint

6. Triumph TR6, 150bhp

7. Jensen Interceptor III, copper brown with black vinyl roof and black leather.

8. Mercedes Benz SLR (the current one; one piece carbon fibre monocoque)

9. Alfa Romeo 147 (I really liked my old company car)

10. Shelby GT500

I was going to put Escort Cosworth in there, but as soon as they became 'affordable' they became stigmatised in an impreza sort of way.

That list will, has and does keep me quite happy.
Can't come up with 10.

Dolomite Sprint - Such an underrated technological leader.

Jensen Interceptor FF - A hugely important and largely ignored first.

Early mini cooper - World changing stuff

Delorean - Legendary. It'd have to have some beans spent in the engine dept to make it move as good as it looks.

Triumph Spitfire - The only Le Mans winner I can see me ever being able to afford.

Triumph Stag - Magenta automatic with factory air con. Love that sound.

Land Rover Seies IIa - with a rover V8. Love the rover v8 and so its this or a TR8....

Mitsubishi Evo VIII - Simply for the astonishing amount of technology you get for the money. Can't see me ever being able to afford to drive one but I could sit and stare under the open bonnet for hours.

Smart - An early one, modern world changing stuff. A crying shame the company got s###ed over. Could have been as big as the mini if they'd stuck at it and sorted out the handling.
De Tomaso Pantera GTS - Italian looks, unburstable American muscle. has to be a 1971-3, with or without a big wing.

Any Dolomite, just because.

Lotus 7, the most fun you can have on wheels.

Any Series Landrover, simply the best at what it was designed for.

Jaguar XJC 5.3 - the most beautiful pillarless coupe ever.

Rover P5B - Perfect luxury barge, great engine and looks.

TVR Griffith - The original 60's one with the silly engine. Way too much power for the chassis.

That will do for now.
