Freudenburg

#2 Post by Carl » Sun Jan 22, 2006 9:38 pm

It's basically a mini flywheel that fits at the front of the crankshaft. It alters the harmonic vibration frequencies of the crankshaft. There are two points between 0 and 6000rpm when the crank resonates creating much increased peak stresses upon it. The Freudenburg damper moves these two points up out of the possible rev range. A engine balanced with modern equipment generally doesn't need one but they certainly do help to give smooth revving. I think there was an earlier post on this subject ?

A freudenberg damper helps reduce the frequency of freudenberg slips.

They look like a 5 inch diameter flywheel and I think they allow the engine to be revved beyond 8200rpm. Something really nasty happens in Sprint engines at this particular rpm which generally results in rods saying hello through the block.
I'd say it's worth keeping quiet. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Real answer. I've no idea but I get the feeling that someone will pay alot of money for it as I think this is the only one I've seen on ebay ever.

Do you think this could be a viable club remanufacturing item? I reckon there could be quite a bit of interest considering the number of people on this board alone who are spending serious money on their engines. If so, if a club member wins it, could they make it available for remanufacturing purposes?
There is a while to go so no point jumping in yet. Lets see what the club's position is. I might make my own enquiries as to the expertise required. From the pictures, it doesn't look too complex but then I'm no engineer.

If I were to win it, then I would make sure it was available one way or another.
I certainly have a contact who could make patterns from it. I will hold off bidding unless advised otherwise.

motorracinggrandpa and touchbin are frequent dolly bidders; anyone know them? are they on here?

I suspect that motorracinggrandpa makes the occasional appearance on the motorsport forum and lives in south west leics.
If you look at these items, you will see that they are a standard harmonic balancer with an adaptor to suit the crankshaft.

We (SPRINTPARTS) have already made an adaptor (which adapts the balancer to a Dolomite OHC crank).

After you buy an adaptor from us, if you ask really nicely, we might even tell you what car uses this same type of balancer. This is not any great secret, just that it has not been common knowledge.
Can't see the adaptor on your site - how much is it?
Just do a kit for us Mark. Your company has a good reputation and you have a captive audience here. How much would you estimate the kit would be all in (if you did one?)
Harmonic Balancer Adaptor

#15 Post by Mark Larmour » Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:11 am

The adaptors that we have had made, are CNC machined and come with the capscrews, cost is A$95.00.

The balancers that we have been using are secondhand items, and I am sure would be cheaper to source in the UK than Australia, as they are from a European car.

Hasn't anyone worked out from which car they are from??????

Maybe we should start a guessing competition, with one Dolomite UK (?????) person excluded.
