Standard - Triumph Factory Memorial

#1 Post by Stan Part » Fri Feb 17, 2006 7:25 pm

On the Canley Works site stands a Stainless Steel Memorial to the factory.

Does anyone know as to why the club didn't sponser this when it was in the planning stages in the mid 1990s ?

It seems just about every Standard and Triumph car club has a plaque on there except the TDC - Why ?

Can't you guess?

I recall it was dealt with by the 'Triumph Forum'. I believe someone fell out with the Triumph Forum...

bet there isn't a plaque in Speke? or if there was some scally would have nicked it. Coming to think of it weren't Dolly bodies made in Speke and assembled in Canley or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The Standard-Triumph Monument was erected in April 2000 at around the time that we attended our first S-T Forum meeting. Sadly it was too late for us to make a contribution to the monument fund, hence why our name isn't listed as being one of the sponsors. Ian (memsec) and I attended the ceremony, as did several other club members, but not as official representatives of the club. As Alun has hinted, the previous administration of the club didn't warm to the idea of the formation of the S-T Forum and consequently we didn't attend the early meetings. There was a change of attitude in 2000 and we have attended all subsequent meetings, even hosting one of the meetings ourselves. Whether anything can be done now to get our name added to the monument I'm not sure.

Thanks for that.

Yes, Alun I did guess - but it's nice to know I was thinking in the right direction.

As to whether we could be put on later, I guess if we didn't contribute to it's manufacture the answer is no, but does it ever need any maintenance ? I guess not being stainless steel but if ever it did could that not be a way for a future contribution ?

I for one would like to donate something towards it - anyone else be willing ?

As for Speke, I believe that both factory 1 and 2 still exist.

One of them (not sure which) apparently is as it was left in about 1980. The other is a trading park and is called (something like) Triumph Trading Estate and has roads named like Spitfire Way etc. So I guess there is no need for a plaque as the "name" at least still lives on.

Just remembering a bit more about this, I think that one of the reasons why the club didn't contribute was that there was a requirement to donate so much per member towards the fund. The then club secretary didn't feel able to commit club funds to this cause, although he did encourage members to make donations as individuals if they so wished.
There is a sum of money in an account held by the TR Register on behalf of the S-T Forum which is pays for the upkeep of the Monument. I could make a phonecall to discuss he possibility of getting our name added to the Monument, then sound out members as to whether they feel that we should take things further. I suspect that as membership fees are likely to increase this year, members may feel that we shouldn't be spending their money in this way.....
Monument fund

Thanks for the info.

I think if any contribution is made on behalf of the club then it should be done on a voluntary basis, each member could then decide if they wish to contribute rather than having an increase in membership fee.

If a call could be made to find out as to find out if:

(1)there is the possibilty of having the club's name put on it and

(2) if so what is the total amount needed from members of the club (including the work need to have a plaque installed upon it).

If there wasn't a need for us to contribute directly to its up keep (as this is already in place) then could a one off donation from club members to a nominated charity be a good alternative.

If you could find out the answer to this that would be great.

Just think if we were to be able to go ahead and do this then we could get a fair bit of free publicity in the classic car media. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
Yes it may be possible, from a technical point of view, to have our name added. However, this may cost a significant amount because of the construction of the monument.
The other hurdle to overcome may be that some Standard-Triumph Forum members may not be keen on us having our name added as we didn't contribute in the first place. I may raise the issue at the next meeting.

Yes, I understand what you're saying. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I think that our major hurdle will be convincing our members that their subscription fees should be used for this purpose, in a year in which we will be raising fees for the first time in a decade. We will not pursue the matter without first discussing it at our AGM, it's only fair that everyone is able to have their say.
