Renault mystery running problem
Renault mystery running problem
Mate has had work done to his renault Clio in college as the water pump had seized

Heres whats been done to it

"we stripped it down skimmed head and put new water pump and head gasket on. then put it all bak together

started it up and it ran fine

ran for about an hour waiting for fan to cut in before realising fan wasnt connected.

connected fan (electric) and as we did engine died.

went to start it back up and something is very wrong

do a compression test shows that there is no comprssion in any cylinder

Not even 1 PSI!!!

check clearencs on tappes and there is no gap at all. slackend them all of and still nuthin

timing is set up perfectly"

Evne the college lecturers are stumped!
Sorry to sound mean here, but your lecturers let an engine run for an hour without any cooling?

Was this some sort of destruction test or were you too busy looking out of the windows at the hockey team? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

And these are the people who train "mechanics" to then be let loose on the public...

What was he thinking of? Or maybe like me he was a pathalogcal hater of cheap french tat...ha another one for the scrappy...bring it on.

35 quid a ton I hear...

Being serious....sounds like you need another higher quality head gasket and possibly a temp guage? I know some cheap frog crap only has a warning light...fat lot of use that is!
Re: clio
Some of those early Clio Head's should only be skimmed to clean the face only.

1200 and the 1400's where also prone to oil leak's from the head gasket.

And to top it all the latest Renault's use Nissan engine's
(Clio 172/182 V6Sport to name a few).

1980 Dolomite SprintV8 (Soon to be shoehorned with a 360bhp of TVR AJP V8 Pumping Alloy !)
2002 Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDi Estate.... Part's delivery Vehicle.
They laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at them because they are all the same!)

2 bent valves....

And the crank
was tighten to what torque setting?.

Did you use new head bolt's as they are the STRECTHED type.

Head bolt like this?.
1) 20Nm
2) 90 +- 6 degree
3) Wait 3 Minutes
4) Slacken Bolt's 1+2 then tighten to 20 Nm + 200 Degrees
5) Repeat Step 4 for bolt's 3.4.5+6
6) Repeat Step 4 for bolt's 7.8.9+10

They should be 3 number's after D7F

can you guess?
we stripped it all down again today and found the problem. sheered woodruff key. apparently it is a common fault. in renault garages they supposedly change the crankshaft pulley when a timing belt change is done. another fitter from renault had one sheer on a test drive. the car doesnt have a temp gauge only a warning light<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> load of use that is. anyways. pulled all the valves out again to check for bentness as when the key sheered the cam rotated 180 degrees. the result is now two bent valves and a gutted owner.
thanks for he offer of teh new engine but the engine in his clio is a 1.2 diet not energy. maywell come in handy when hes killed his though<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">
thanks for the suggestions
Re: can you guess?
The woodruff key only normanlys breaks when the crankshaft bolt hasn't been tighten correctly.
