Pet Hate

#16 Post by hutch76 » Tue Mar 14, 2006 8:41 am

Remember guys, the speed limit is just that. It's the MAXIMUM speed allowable on that part of road. So, when someone is doing 30 in a 50, he/she isn't doing something wrong.

Okay sermon concluded! To be fair I did the advanced driving thingy a few years back, and they want to see a 'brisk' drive during the test. That is to say, NEVER breaking the speed limit, but driving at the maximum alllowable speed, conditions appropriate.

Driving a taxi on a daily basis, it's pedestrians I loathe. Nowadays, they watch you coming, then step in front of you, causing you to take the evasive action. Of course in the eyes of the law, if you hit them, you the motorist are to blame. It must be the result of the culture we live in, whereby they know if they get hit,and survive (that's the important bit in my eyes) they will be able to get a nice claim off your insurance.

I personally know of a guy who ran someone over. Independant witnesses exhaunerated him of all blame. Completely the pedestrians fault. Still, the poor DRUNK pedestrian has a £10k claim in against the driver, who's insurance company have informed him they are going to pay & his NCB is history.

About time jay-walking laws were introduced.

They teach you to drive AT the speedlimit in lessons these days, you have to get to 60 as fast as you can in most instances as 'not to obstruct other road users'.

Is there summat in the highway code about obstructing, i.e. doing less than the limit?

Well I was just going to enjoy reading this and not make a contribution...

...until this morning.

These days I cycle to work every day. There are cycle paths, but that means stopping for every side road and avoiding the other cyclists who can't ride straight or on the left and pedestrians, dogs etc, so I prefer to use the road. This morning I got not one but two motorists in quick succession shouting at me to get on the cycle path. Twats! Sadly I believe the highway code now says cyclists should use the cycle path if there is one, so if I get run over riding on the road I'll probably not have a leg to stand on (pun not intended). Another example of rules made by well meaning do-gooders with no idea of what is actually needed. Driver attitude change would be a start. Things with wheels belong on the road.

Grrrr!! Rant over.
It can also be driving without due care and attention. Driving at say 30mph in a 50mph when that speed is so slow as to cause other road users problems is dangerous.

The worst offenders are those that refuse to use the on-slip to get up to speed on dual carriageways or motorways. They drive on at 45mph and then acclerate to 65mph only once they are on the main road. All the lorries are diving out into lane 2 so that they don't re-arrange the rear end of their Rover 25 and as a conswquence the lane 2 drivers have to slam the anchors on. And they wonder why the road networks don't run freely?! Ha. Slow drivers are a nuisance.
And then there are the people who do 45mph everywhere. 70, 60 limit, 40 limit, and then you come to a 30 limit and they're still doing 45! Clearly fast asleep.
With you completely David on the cycling thing. I will not use cycle lanes when out on my road bike. I hate being expected to stop every few yard to give way to every little thing but thats not the main reason. The main reason is that these cycle lanes on our roads are planned by f###wits who wouldn't know a ROAD bike if you hit them over the head with it (a pleasing mental image). Road bikes have no suspension, skinny tyres in excess of 100psi (140 on mine) and a saddle like the proverbial razor blade. Try riding one of those on an urban cycle lane at at best you'll not be able to focus for an hour, at worst you'll never have kids.

My mountain bike copes very well on cycle lanes. Now, what terrain do we think a MOUNTAIN bike is built to cope with?
Road Rage

#28 Post by SuffolkSprint » Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:04 pm

Some interesting comments <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I drive for my job, mainly in Cambridge City centre, where bicycle, car, van, truck, bus and caravan mingle awkwardly on over populated roads. There are thousands of cyclists in Cambridge and most of them are basically suicidal. No lights, dark clothes, pulling out without looking, not concentrating, no road skills at all. I am a cyclist myself and I know how intimidating it can be to be surrounded by loads of vehicles, I wouldn't dream of riding around in the dark with no lights on. You simply can not see these people, especially on dark wet evenings. It's frightening to think if anything happens, we the driver is to blame. Having said that, being a cyclist, I do use the cycle lanes... because I know what wombats there are on the road and don't trust them to avoid my car let alone me on a bike! I appreciate cycle lanes are unsuitable for road bikes - that's because they're usually a converted footpath and are not specially built. So bikes either share a strip with pedestrians (not a good mix) or buses (a worse mix!).

As for driving on fast roads, I'm sorry but I have found truck drivers are some of the worst. I have had several occasions where I have been travelling at 60 and an articulated has been about 2 feet from my bumper. Braking is clearly not a safe option, can you imagine the carnage is they swerved (or indeed didn't!), so I usually back off the throttle a little, which they hate of course, thus creating some extra space ahead of me (I believe this is the advice of the Institute of Advanced Motorists). NOT ALL truck drivers are like this, obviously, and I am sure what Reg says is completely true about car drivers! I believe car drivers are the worst offenders myself, but maybe this is because there are more of them... I mean us! No driving group is lilly white out there!

As for road rage (the topic of this thread, afterall!) I find it difficult not to react to sometone doing something which is REALLY dangerous... but as someone said, you never know who is behind the wheel or any weapons they may have! It's just not worth it, and if things get heated, pulling over is definitely the best tactic.

So fed up was I with nearly getting killed on the A14 everytime I used it, I have now enrolled on an advanced driving course.
Let them go ! Wise words.
They will come unstuck one day but you won't letting them past. Too many bats, knives & guns about these days to take a chance especially if you have family in the car.
Is there such thing as horn abuse (oi oi) Im going to get done for it soon I'm sure <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

When I hear a horn blast the first thing i do is check what I'm doing wrong. So if a car in front of me is straddling lanes on a round about or indicating incorrectly a quick honk is satisfying.

A few days back I wanted to join the dual carriage way from a petrol station and there was a van in the inside lane with nothing around it not letting me out. He was to close for me to go (lackin in performance at the moment) and far enough away to make me wait to long considerign he could of bloody moved over! So as he passed me I beeped him. Got out a car or two later and caught him up (not chasing him) and over took him. He beeped me and then I beeped him twice... It's like a language to me.

Gawwwd the youth today, no hope <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">
