One of my colleagues has just been on an 'Ageism' course in preparation for the change to Employment Law due to be implemented in October this year.

Once it has been made 'law', employers will no longer be allowed to use such words as 'bright' 'mature', 'experienced', 'lively' or 'enthusiastic' when recruiting staff. I kid you not!

The names of applicants, age, gender etc. will also need to be removed from application forms prior to them being shortlisted so that there isn't any discrimination.

They are also going to be keeping figures on the ages of persons employed; I guess to see what percentage are 'mature' persons. Is this going to lead to the government dictating to companies that they must employ a certain percentage of women/men/ethnic minorities/school leavers/people near retiring age/transgendered people etc? Surely jobs should be given to the most suitable applicants regardless of any of the above? IMHO there are many jobs where maturity and experience would be a distinct advantage.

Time to emigrate me thinks...................
True Susie But....
I have become seriously hacked off with submitting application after application to just have them used as bin fodder.

10 years ago I woudl submit half a dozen CV's, get 3 interviews and land a choice of 2 contract IT jobs...

Now I submit 50 + CV's (email I admit so that bits easier) half the time agencies dont even acknowledge they've got it. Then it will sit in an HR dept in tray for 2 weeks and when it gets in the thirty something "managers" desk he looks at my DOB I suspect and it goes in the bin. I only apply if my skills match the job spec...its pointless otherwise so I know there is no other good reason.

I cant think of any other reason why I dont get interviews....unless everyone sees my posts here and doesn't want a dolomite driver...

Bring it on...
Jon
I totally agree with shortlisting 'blind' as it were - it happens where I work but they still find ways around it.
I am just against the banning of certain words from being used.

Sometimes there needs to be a bit of positive discrimination; if a role requires a mature and experienced person there is no point in 18-year-olds applying!

Sorry if you've fallen foul of age discrimination.
