Personal Imports

A friend of mine has been offered a Mitsubishi Delica for the right money.<br>

Its a South African import and not UK registered at present. He has seen the import documents and all taxes are paid.<br>
<br>
What steps need to be taken to get the vehicle UK registered? I'm only asking 'coz I don't have a clue myself but I know some of you jolly clever folks will.<br>

too much of a problem as there are loads of Jap import ones round here.<br>
Think you need a single vehicle type aproval test, an MoT and then its off to the local VRO...<br>
You may need to fix things like fog lights and indicators colour, reversing lights colour etc...<br>

I saw it myself just a few minutes ago. Its actually a Japanese car, arriving via South Africa. Is there any way at all that one could be sure it wasn't a stolen car? <br>

All the paperwork is there, including Japanese registration document. But if its stolen, there's a lot of money to lose on it.<br>

ring a local import company they should be able to give you the details. the car will need a sva test , mot , dvla registering which will cost £300 - £500. if it is nicked it will show up on the dvla computer when they do their bit. the jap paper work will be checked by sva people.<br>
make sure the car has a good service including flushing the fuel system if its a diesel as water collects in the tank and filter. some parts such as starter motors are NOT readily available in the uk and will cost ££££s. <br>

if it comes with the jap paper work it will show up on the magic box thingy which is linked with a world wide data base(bar a few countries) so in a round a bout short answer type way yes it will come up as nicked or show the paper work isn't relative to that car(unless its a ringer with well forged docs.).but as everything goverment the system is not 100% reliable.<br>

Rust Proofing

Most Jap cars have non-existent rust proofing as they are generally kept for a short period of time, something to do with their equivilent of an MOT. They are still as reliable as "european" spec cars but I would recommend a weekend spent with a large vat of rustproofer and a compressor blasting wax into every cavity and the underside.<br>

these should fall into the cheaper end of sva testing loads have been imported so they will have data on them<br>
the lights are the same as ours except the fogs i think friend has recently imported a harrrier (rx300) <br>
go for a 2.8 as the 2.5 is crap unless its a petrol version<br>
if they make one ! put in a plate on the egr system to stop the exhaust from belching smoke simple job takes about 20 mins
