Washing Machine ANyone?

#1 Post by Jon Tilson » Thu Jun 01, 2006 5:36 pm

Anybody bought a new washing machine lately?
Ive just been out on the hunt for one and find the whole business bamboozling...

SO if anyone has some good washing machine feedback I'd be glad of it....

Must be particularly good at washing overalls without transferring muck to the white stuff...e.g. my tennis socks...
I now have this dreadful image of you in tennis socks Jon...with sandals.

They are all much of a muchness mate, but my advice is buy Hotpoint, only ones now made in UK. I bought an 'Aquarius 1200' washer dryer over five years ago and its been fantastic. Even I have managed to keep my whites white and my black shirts black. gets oil and plaster out of overalls a treat.

Rarely use the dryer bit, but it has come in handy once or twice. Energy rating was poor, but that was because of the dryer bit.

Gets used average 3 times a week for all manner of stuff.

Avoid Currys, Comet, Powerhouse et al as they are all abunch of sharks just interested in selling you credit and extended warranty. Find an old fashioned back street specialist or buy on line.

Don't forget to recycle the drum of the old one. Excellent patio heaters!

washing machines

#5 Post by SprintMWU773V » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:22 am

Washing machines are designed to go wrong after about 6 years so there is no point in buying an expensive one. We got one 4 years ago an Indesit one which was a gift for our then new house. Occasionally it just clicks the control knob around for no reason and you have to start all over again. I find I only use one program so the fact that the fault appears on another one doesn't bother me. The dial is all written in woman anyway so is difficult for me to understand.

John Lewis is a pretty good place to get one from as they are at least quite nice to deal with. Just make sure it has a decent spin speed and has a good energy rating.

We did once have my sister in law's machine stored in the garage. Drove Dolly into it one day and dented it. Then started it up with the exhaust on it and it went black. Muck cleaned off OK but had to knock the dent out, a quick skim of body filler and some "Appliance White" enamel paint. Never confesed to this sin but now they have it back and everytime I look at it I know what I did!
We bought the cheapest one in the shop 5 years ago (Beko) and its still going. Its been washing stuff every-day in order to keep up with demand from the kids. I think we paid £220 for it.

My Mum always used to spend £600 on Hotpoint stuff and it would break after 18 months. The repair bills were always £300. The way I figured it with the cheap one, is that if it breaks down, it would be cheaper to buy a new one rather than get ripped off by the repair cowboys.
My washer is a Beko the same as Scotts (exactly if I remember) fantastic machine used almost as regularly.
Never had any problems in the four years I've had it.
Its silver (as her indoors wanted) and cheap too.

Beko

Same as Indesit if I remember rightly. Factory in Italy makes loads of different brands badge engineered for different customers. We always had Hotpoint at home cos Dad worked for the GEC who owned them and we got em cheap. Given the hard life they had they did pretty well I guess. other places to try are "graded" stores who sell ones with a small scratch or dent in them but fully warrantied. Great if you either don't care or have it hidden behind a door or such like.

Believe a Toyota Corolla will also wash clothes as it is white goods.
Only one choice for longevity - ASKO

Bought one in 1994 for 600 quid and it has never ever gone wrong. Industrial strength build quality with pleasing looks and pukka reliability.

Their publicity material at the time showed the machine suspended from a block and tackle, hanging by the loading door.

Find another company that offers a 5 year parts and labour warranty for twelve quid... Says it all really.
i just sold a low mileage washing machine to my sister in law for £50

i'd go with hoover, i had one in my 'old house', left it there, and bought a new 'hoover' for my 'latest' hinckley house, which is the one I just sold. my mum works in the co-op, all about deals!!

i had a hotpoint one before that, and my mum says they're crap, and hoover ones are the most reliable avergae high street shop style ones. shes always had hoover ones for as long as I can remember, in fact in my 33 years alive, i think shes only ever had 3 washing machines... not bad really.

I live in p'boro where Hotpoint manufacture all there goods, my bro in law's worked there since about 1975 and reckons there all sh#t nowadays, monkey metal n plastic.the i'ties own most of it now and all sorts are made here, Creda, Indesit.
On the same thread(sort of) if buying a vaccuum, dont buy a dyson, buy a Henry..We have several 20 gallon capacity wet/dry industrial cleaners at work each costing £500 and they have the same motors as Henry and he's only about £80
Kobe from Cromwell tools is aslo a good buy for the money.... but they dont sell washing machines so i'll shut up!
