I was very saddened to learn of the passing of the genius Syd Barrett today.
Being a churl....
While he had an undoubted influence on the early stuff....they didnt really do anything special until Dark Side...by which time he was past it....
The true Floyd sound is down to Dave Gilmour...who of course replaced him. They are kind about him but thats about all you can be...

Shame really....
Re: Being a churl....
I disagree Jon, the SECOND Floyd sound was down to Gilmour, the FIRST was a breed apart and seminal in his own right and attributable to Barrett, who if we are honest, left us a good number of years ago.

Sad nevertheless.

Mind, it was Gilmour's era that allowed Mr Mason to be able to buy all those nice cars

barret..
the floyd sound was set by syd his influence, creativity went further than piper at .. listen to ' the madcap laughs ' it's roger waters and dave gilmours (strat) that shape the future that evolves the floyd sound having bought all the floyd albums from day one
was listening to them before they ever made it into the charts with 'arnold layne ' the best selling was of course
dark side ... dare i say more mainstream (commercial sounding).... but not the best it of course depends on your taste
