Sun Cream and Hats!

#1 Post by Dolly Bird » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:06 pm

I don't want to be morbid, but this is just a warning to everyone!

My Dad found out last Friday that he has got (or rather hopefully now got rid of) skin cancer ........ of the ear lobe!

He went to the doctors about 3 weeks ago as a lump had come up behind one of his ear lobes. The first two GP's incorrectly diagnosed it as a cyst, and gave him two different lots of antibiotics. As they made no difference at all, Dad went back, saw a third GP, who had him in hospital within 12 hours having it removed!

The test results came back last week, and sadly it was a malignant tumour, but hopefully (fingers crossed) it has all been removed. Thank goodness for that third GP, and for the fact that my Dad went back because he wasn't happy.

By the way, Dad always puts a really high factor suncream on and always wears a hat, so it just goes to show ....! But then again, how many of us put suncream on our ear lobes ?!

I`m sorry to hear that, reminds me of a friend of mine, he went to the doctor as he a had a mole on his leg that was concerning him, said doctor dismissed it, my friend went back a week later as the mole had got bigger, they removed it, had it tested, it turned out to be cancerous, this resulted in an operation to remove a large chunk of his thigh about 8 inches long, he`s just 28 years old, goes to prove, young or old you do need to be very careful. Personally I use nothing below factor 25 and always wear a hat, lillywhite legs I may have but burnt I am not.

Sorry to hear that.

I think its more common than people realise. My Dad had a two inch chunk taken from his cheek. Luckily non-malignant. Having worked outdoors for all of his Adult life without once applying sun cream, I suppose it was to be expected. It scared the crap out of him and he is now the biggest proponent of suncream. Kids are most at risk but then you have to balance out the risks of lack of vitamin C.
I put on factor 30 cream, and try and stay in the shade when I can. It's actually harder to stay lilly white than to get a tan !

On a brighter note, my Dad has got a very positive attitude towards it all, his philosophy being "I've had 82 years of good health so far, and there's no reason why I can't have a few more"!

I wish it were true of me. I just go bright red then white again so I just avoid the sun at all costs, this does pose a problem come the time of the annual Le Mans pilgrimage

Sorry Steve, I didn't make myself very clear. What I meant by the Quote: "It's actually harder to stay lilly white than to get a tan !", is that it's a lot harder to try NOT to go a bright shade of pink/red (like I also do). I always seem to find a little patch that I missed with the suncream

Al,

You're right, Dad has got the right attitude to life. Hence probably the reason why he has been so fit and well so far (and looks about 15 years younger than he is ). He puts me to shame with his fitness routine, and his social calendar is always busy, to the extent that I virtually have to book an appointment to see him these days
Alun, just to answer your combine quote, you were very close. It was Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Frebbin in 'The Naked Gun' just after Norberg falls from the stadium walls and gets trampled over by a marching band.
