I'm in the wrong business

#1 Post by 1300mash » Tue Aug 29, 2006 11:57 am

I ran out of bread so I stopped at the CO-OP on my way to work this morning and did something I am loathe to do very often; I bought a pre-packed sarnie, you know in the plastic triangle. Ham and cheese, £1.60 That was one of the cheaper ones.

£1.60! Where on earth did that price come from? Adding up the cost of the ingredients (catering prices) and packaging plus the fact that whoever made it is probably on minimum wage and makes hundreds of sandwiches a day it must be just pence to produce surely.
Is it a price that someone has determined the general public will pay without complaining too much maybe a certain psychological marketing level?
Must be a damn good profit whatever.
Seems expensive for the ingredients, but then there is country wide distribution, out of date wastages which are probably considerable, initial profit for the makers and then subsequent mark up for distributors and retailers and it soon adds up. Your bespoke sandwich shop can't do any better because they have rent, rates and staff to pay on top of ingredients and then have a short window of retail opportunity at lunchtime.
I always go for egg mayo if I have to buy one as they are generally 99p and remind me of school trips...and make me fart

Why not get a Mate to work in Subway? You could get free sandwiches then.
