Best Car you ever owned

#1 Post by Jon Tilson » Fri Aug 25, 2006 9:11 am

Since young Mr Reader thinks I only have -ve things to say its time to be positive...

So what's the best car you ever owned then?

For me thats a really tough one....Ive had/still have some right heaps (sorry too -ve again) and Ive had some crackers.

I suppose the one I would least like tp part with is my Spit 1500, cos through that I met my wife...

But as a car, the P6 3500S or Sprint or TR7 K plate dolly probably.
Sprint: CAB. My original and the best. End of story.

Being sooo discerning though I have to say I have never had a bad car

Well, its not the end of the story, I still have her and she will live again!

It's a Sprint, but I'm not sure which one was the best.
The Sprints I've had have always been the best cars I've owned...until I bought the Prelude & now the S2000.

The one I own now . I'd best say that otherwise she might start "playing up"!
Previous to her, a 1989 1.6 Escort Ghia, and previous to that a 1975 Triumph Toledo.

My old SD1 complete with 3.9 conversion, fast, comfortable and great looking. I try not to think about about the poor way in which it was bolted together, it just shatters the illusion.

Tough one this..... As there are positive's and negative's to all the cars I've owned.

Fiat X1/9 dare I say it!
Two seats (always a bonus, although I did pull a bird once with my two seat line and I was driving an Escort van!) rev happy little engine and very sweet handling.

Yes the X1/9.

Triumph 1300 of course! First car I bought when I was 18, others have come and gone but still got this one 12 years later. Proof enough

Nice to see so many people rate their Dollies like this. Count me in too. My P-reg Sprint, still the best standard Sprint I've ever driven.

My first proper (and best) car was a K reg 4 door Toledo. I loved it. It was reliable, comfy and easy to maintain. Bit like 1300 Dolly now.

Tough call, my Sprint is up there because its become more like another body organ than a car I've had it that long, but its never been as good as I wanted it to be.

So its got to be my Smart Roadster, probably one of the slowest cars I've ever owned in a straight line but nothing else I've driven either feels, sounds and looks quite like it and had the ability to shatter misconceptions! And its pennies to run.

I wanted another one within 5 seconds of flogging it!

1976 mini clubman, blue (about three shades until I treated it to a full halfords spray can respray)

My first car, it had 106 thousand on it when I got it and I did 20000 miles in it with nothing significant going wrong. It put up with all my tinkering and still performed well (for a mini).

It got me interested in cars and showed me how much better my mates inca sprint was than my mini. I guess I wanted one from then....

1981 1500 HL - off to collect it tomorrow - to be my daily driver.
1980 Inca Sprint - Quite tidy, Running!
1979 Blue 1850 auto - Sold, gone
1978 Inca Sprint Engine back in needs timing
1978 Yellow 1850 auto - spares car
1973 Mimosa Sprint Project car - sold, going end of september

My favourite car that I have owned would have to be a bit of weird choice to some of you.

a 1992 Rover 214SLi. It was my second car which I bought with 77k on the clock and had it for 3 1/2 years whilst at uni. Never gave me too much problem. Went very well with it's little 1.4 16v motor. It was BRG with a beige interior. Being an SLi it came with lots of wood trim and electric front windows. It let me down a few times, it overheated 200 miles from home and I had to be towed back (head gasket fine by the way!), alternator went twice once in a particularly nasty part of Liverpool, gear linkage sheard off meaning I had no gears and a tyre blew on the motorway. Apart from that pretty good. Gave 40+mpg, an indicated 120mph and was comfy.

Chopped it in at 114k still going strong for another Rover only a later HH-R 416Sli which I didn't like nearly as much and only kept for a year and 20k before part ex-ing for a Focus which I still have. It doesn't feel special like the Rover, though outhandles it somewhat! The 416 was sold on by the dealer to a smaller dealer who had it in stock for 3 years before it finally sold about 6 months ago.

Which I bought new in '98 and passed on to my dad about 5 years ago. So far so good until No.2 son borrowed it one wet evening....
